RE: John Vinton Holcomb

[Send Reply]
John Vinton Holcomb
John Holcomb b. 14 Jan 1775 NY d. ? Van Buren Co, IA, is my 5th times great-grandfather. I have conducted extensive research of my Holcomb(e) lineage and I have a few questions regarding this headstone record in Van Buren County, Iowa.

#1. His name. Do you have proof that John's middle name was Vinton? In my research of all known deeds, (no probate located) and historical records do not indicate his middle name was Vinton. He simply went by John Holcomb without even a middle initial. I respectfully ask that you remove that middle name from the posting, unless there is a SOURCED RECORD, it confuses researchers.

I removed Vinton as John’s middle name.

#2. Where is the proof that John Holcomb b. 1775 is buried in Leando Cemetery in Douds? Are there actual old cemetery records, death records, or a probate record that lists John Holcomb's death date as Oct. 6 1853? Unless there is proof, the death date should not be posted. His last known residence John was on enumerated on the 1850 census Chequest, Van Buren Co, IA, age 76, born NY, living with his son Samuel Daniel Holcomb, wife, and children. I have no doubt that John Holcomb is buried there with his family, but I would like to see a SOURCED RECORD of his death date and place.

John was born 1775
John died in 1853 in Van Buren County, Iowa, and is buried there, place unknown.

I have moved John and Chloe memorials to virtual cemeteries (Holcomb) until cemeteries can be found for them.

I believe Chloe Mudge Holcomb died prior to 1850. McPherson's Holcombe biography lists her as dying in 1851, but as she is not on the 1850 census with her husband and son in Chequest, Iowa, I believe she died sometime before 1850.

John Holcomb was the son of Zephaniah Holcomb and Tryphenia/Taphena Niles. Children: 10 enumerated on the 1820 Huntington, Gallia Co, OH - sons: Niles, Mansley, Ira, William R. John Mudge, Samuel Daniel; daughters - Amanda, Cynthia, Henrietta (Laura?), Mary?

I count 13 children, your 10 plus Elizabeth, Abner Johnson Holcomb and Taphena Holcomb:
Elizabeth Holcomb -
Abner Johnson Holcomb - (1795-1874) - 11072844
Taphena Holcomb - (1795-1875) -
Niles Holcomb - (1797-1877) - 90425588
Amanda Holcomb - (1799- )
Mansley Holcomb - (1803-1833) - 17245509
Ira Holcomb - (1805-1860)
William R. Holcomb - (1809-1931) - 24961986
Samuel Daniel - (1817-1875)
John Mudge Holcomb -
Cynthia Holcomb -
Henrietta (Laura?) -
Mary? -

#3. I believe you may be mixing this John Holcomb b. 1775 with his nephew John V. Holcomb d. 18 Aug 1858, Aged 39y 2m 14d (son of Stephen Holcomb b. 1772 NY & Susanna Ewing and a brother of John b. 1775 NY - both sons of Zephaniah Holcomb and Tryphena/Taphena Niles). John V. Holcomb's grave is Find A Grave memorial #92570406; spouse was Margaret Mahala Ross. I am not sure that this John's middle name was actually Vinton either. On all the records located for him, there is only the middle initial "V." John V. Holcomb left a Will, Van Buren Co, IA, Book F:375, 376 on 8 Aug 1858, proved 16 Oct 1858.
Children of John (Vinton?) Holcomb & Margaret Mahala Ross: five all named in John V.'s will, Sarah Jane, Stephen, Clement, Robert, John V.
John also bequeathed a colt to his niece, Malinda Ann Holcomb (daughter of his brother Samuel R. Holcomb and Mary Jane Ross Holcomb).

Thank you for taking the time to read my posting and I look forward to a reply.

John Holcomb– (1775-1853) – 28374865
JULIA BORDONA (#47442377) -

I have rewritten John's memorial using "John Holcomb: Son of a Revolutionist, family man, Judge, Ohio political activist". This is a bibliogrpah written in large part by John P. Wilcox. When I first started my venture into genealogy (abot ten years ago) it was John P. Wilcox who helped me get started. He gave me his data base on the Holcomb's goimg all the was back to Sir John De Holcombe, my 23 ggf. Sir John was knighted by King Richard the Lionjeart of England, for fighting in the three battles of Palestine. In the Third battle, he is said to have cut off the heads of three Turk's with one swipe of his sword, My goal is to help clean up the Holcomb genealogy for the last three hundred years.

I have removed any middle initial or name from John's name..

II have no proof as to where John Holcomb and his wife, Chloe Mudge, are buried, but I have created memorials for them:
John Holcomb - 28374865
Chloe Mudge Holcomb - 133502110

I am not confusing John Holcomb (1775-1853) wuth John V. Holcomb (1819-1858) - 92570406 I have just rewritten John V's memorial and am in the process of rewriting his wife;s (Margaret M. Holcomb - 92570470) memorial
