RE: Whaley
Sadly my mom developed dementia and became very uncooperative would not take medication when it was given to her would not cooperate about a lot of things would not get up and do any activities and her doctor warned her that she had to have mild activity if she wanted to stay healthy enough to stay out of the nursing home but because of the dementia I don't think she understood that so she had to go last October. She still talks about coming home she is doing better than expected even though she's under hospice care. She is able to get out of bed and get to her wheelchair and get things out of the refrigerator in her room and she can will herself to short distances and she can dress yourself if you bring her her clothes and it is sad though because she may have eventually had gone to the nursing home but she could have delayed it for a while But she just did not understand that she needed to go to cardio rehab and have more activity. I guess you're right they put up the monument to Alexander Whaley so Ruth could get his pension although from what I understand she lived to almost 101 and she died from measles. I wonder if they thought they would be paying the pension out that long. I wonder how they were able to prove Ruth was the legal wife. I have wondered if Alexander ever sent anything to Alabama to help his family there. But maybe the children Alexander had with Ruth were able to support her. I know when she got older she had to live with family and have a guardian appointed because she became as the recordset feeble minded she was in her 80's at the time. Do you happen to know which cemetery Alexander and Margaret are buried in? I have looked for them on findagrave and have not found them I have found Margaret listed but no exact listing just itchy is buried in Arkansas.

Yes you did send me a message Ive been meaning to answer it. We put my mother in a nursing home and I am still living in the house that was her house and we are cleaning her stuff out she sadly was a hoarder and were trying to get a lot of the stuff out of the house the house belongs to me now she signed it over and I really dont need a lot of these things and Im donating most of it. I just let a lot of time slip by and I apologize and I have also been ill. Dr thinks it is because my thyroid has been sluggish making me very tired making cleaning the house out the slow progress we have had Community Partnership come and help us and one of my sisters has been helping we have made progress I dont remember if I mentioned this before but I think maybe Alexander Whaley died before 1863 and that is why he is not in the 1860 census I I think I found Margaret living with Riley P Whaley in the 1860 census but I dont remember where they were living in the census they only used the first letter of each name and then the last name and if it is her it was listed as M. Whaley. It would be nice if we could go back in time and check for ourselves. I think it is strange that Ruth would have a grave marker next to her in Alabama that has Alexanders name on it but maybe it was because she was his legal wife although I think you were the one that said you thought Alexander was actually buried in Arkansas maybe it was so Ruth would look better. I doubt they would have taken Alexander to Alabama after he died because of the distance and the condition he he would have been in by the time they got there. Ive always thought that was a terrible thing that he went off and left Ruth and maybe Ruth never really got over him leaving. Maybe after Ruth died her family put that grave marker meaning Alexanders next to hers because they thought she would have wanted it. But then again if Alexander had not left her and gone off with Margaret we wouldnt be here. Well I probably better stop I know theres limited space on these messages.

Whaley
Do you know if Alexander Whaley's Alabama family and Arkansas families ever met each other? Also I think I located Margaret on an 1860 census but I can't find Alexander. I think Alexander died earlier then record show, & I think maybe it says 1863 on the grave marker and Alabama because that is when the family in Alabama found out about his death. But that may not be true he still could have been alive in 1860 its just I could not find him anywhere on the census. I even checked the 1860 Blount County Alabama census thinking maybe he went back home for a while but he was not there either. Sometimes I wonder if this story caused a lot of scandal at that time. Did you ever find or Margaret and Alexander are buried? Thanks for any answers you have. Annette

Margaret Hays
I have made contact with someone who lives in California and is a descendant I have a brother of Margaret Hayes I believe his name was David Margaret's father was named Stanwyck Hayes and his first wife was named Catherine count haze and then he married a woman named Elizabeth and had several children with her this person claims that in Alabama in the 1830 you could you could not get a divorce from your wife but it was not against the law to kill your wife supposedly Stanwyck was tired of Kathryn and wanted to get rid of her so he took her into the barn and killed her with a large piece of firewood the and it's easy to see why Margaret would have left home with Alexander I am sure she may have been afraid ever father at the time she was the only woman in the family she may have been afraid he would have killed her too.
