Catharine Fitzgibbons
Short answer -- no, I did not see Catharine's tombstone. Apparently, it no longer exists - if it ever did.

My assumption that she was buried at St. Augustine is based on the fact that that's where Michael was buried five years earlier, and the fact that they had lived as husband and wife for the previous three decades.

If you look in the last column of the CamGenPa listing for Catharine, you'll see LB/K as the source keys. "LB" refers to my volumes of CATHOLIC VITAL RECORDS OF CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA, and "K" refers to Father Ferdinand Kittell's SOUVENIR OF THE LORETTO CENTENARY. Actually, in my CVR volume V, I note that this record of Catharine's death comes from Father Kittell's SOUVENIR.

Now we need to explain Kittell's death records as he presents them in the SOUVENIR... Since almost no burial records survived at Loretto from the 19th century, Kittell got his data from extant tombstones and also, apparently, from interviewing old timers in his congregation. There are documented cases of Kittell listing a death in his SOUVENIR that took place elsewhere, but which he included for the sake of completeness. I'm sorry I can't cite examples off the top of my head, but I have run into these in the past. Since St. Augustine was set off from St. Michael's as a daughter parish, one should not be surprised if Kittell included deaths that took place there.

I had hoped she might have had a separate estate file at the County Courthouse, but Michael's (#1210) is the only one there.

I still keep coming back to the fact that Catharine and Michael had shared almost thirty years of married life, and that, assuming normal family feelings, the children would have wanted to bury their mother next to their father at St. Augustine.

Perhaps the answer might lie in a newspaper obit at the Historical Society in Ebensburg. I'll give a call over there tomorrow and see if there is anything in the index.
