My family on my mother's side has lived in Stokes County and Rockingham County, North Carolina since before the Revolutionary War. Most of my family on my father's side is from Patrick County, Virginia. I love researching the many branches of my family tree and this website has been a great help to me in finding out more information.|
On my father's side my family names are: Holt, Lawson, Fry, Collins, Davis, and McHone.
On my Mother's side my family names are: Lawson, Bullins, Woods, Corns, Wilkins, Hutcherson, Carter, and Rhodes.

Hi Jamie, thanks for posting all the Vernon family info and pictures on findagrave. I had been puzzling over the info that I had (incorrectly) which indicated that Nancy Jane Vernon and her sister, Eliza both died on the same date... then I say your picture of Eliza's stone which gave her date of death as Octover 28, 1904, not same date as Nancy Jane, who was one of my great grandparents. I may have inadvertantly been a part of making/perpetuating this error myself. Now it makes more sense to me. We were able to visit this cemetery in June and I had great difficulty in following the directions I found at the library in the cemetery books so I have added directions (and some gps numbers) to some of my direct relatives gravesites. Thanks again for the great pictures you took and posted. Are we cousins? Mary L Pierce-Hughes

|Mary Lois||RE: Vernon Cemetery in Ayersville|
Yes Nancy Wilkens-Vernon and her husband, Richard Vernon Sr. are my 4th great grandparents. Their son Richard, Jr. and his wife, Mahala Martin-Vernon, were my 3rd great grandparents. Their daughter, Nancy Jane Vernon, was my 2nd great grandmother. Nancy's daughter, Hettie Vernon was my great grandmother. It was good to hear from you. At one time, years ago I was a member of that genealogy society and ended up not renewing. I'll have to take a look again at membership. As we live in Illinois we don't get to NC very often. I do still have a few Gibson cousins there. Many Thanks for letting me know the source of the info. Later, I may need a specific reference (title, date and pg. number) to use if I decide to add John Wilkins to the list of patriots tied to my DAR membership. (Unless the gravestones are still readable and I can get a picture of them.) Your distant cousin, Mary
|Julie Hampton||RE: Thos. Wilkins|
I'm not related, just happened to find his obit while browsing old newspapers!
By the way, I am also related to John Wilkens b. 1741, d.1838 through his daughter Nancy Wilkens Vernon. I also appreciated the posting of the information on the Wilkens family gravesites. You have been a big help in my research. Mary L Hughes

Thanks so much for submitting all of the information on the Vernon Cemetery. A number of my relatives are buried there. Do the names and dates come from a list or are there still stones there? I would appreciate knowing if there is a list and what the source is for the list. Many thanks once again. Mary L Hughes (Illinois)
