Comstocks
It's easy to get the Comstocks confused, they used the same names so much back then. It seems there are two or more of everybody, 2 Nehemiahs, 2 Hirams, 2 Felixes, etc.

Are you going to create a memorial for Frank? If you do, I will be glad to post the photo I have of him on it. I have never been able to find where he was buried, nor have I found Charlie. Todd is buried by Permelia at Cottonwood in Jack Co., and I think their brother William is buried out near Lubbock. I just discovered that Felix is buried at Wichita Falls, thanks to your hint about Thornberry, it let me know about what part of the state of Texas to look in since I had exhausted Jack and Wise Counties. Thank You!!!!

Mom never much spoke about Todd, a sure sign she didn't like him. She liked Charlie and Felix very much, and I think she also liked Frank. After Marshal was killed Frank helped raise his younger siblings and I think my grandma resented him for it - of course Ada May was only 7 when she lost her dad and she wouldn't have been the first kid to resent anybody she thought was trying to take her dad's place. I do know Mom knew all of Frank's kids, and I think I may have a photo of Mary Comstock Murphy, I will have to go through all the photos and see - I do recall Mom mentioning her. Now I think on it, I do have a photo of Charlie and maybe also Felix. I inherited all the photos Mamaw Ada had but unfortunately many didn't have the names on them, Mom identified all she could, so those people she remembered, like Charles, Felix, and the Marys may be in there. If I can get my old scanner to work, would you like me to email copies to you?

Did you check out Marshal's wife Permelia's memorial page? I have been trying to get management of it but the lady who had it is inactive and I am still waiting for Find A Grave's admin to reply. I was able however to put a photo on it of her. Did you ever hear what her maiden name was? Mom wasn't sure what it was, Permelia passed away when Mom wasn't two years old yet so she had no direct memories of her.

Do you know when Tom died and if he is buried at Terrell or not? I know he was committed there but was discouraged from trying to contact the hospital when a cousin informed me that the Privacy Act still protected even the long dead and that I could get no info about him from them.

RE: Marshall H Comstock
Hello, Jeannee!

Thanks for your note! I was proud to be able to put the photo of Marshal up, and wish I was able to get a good scan of the other image I have of him, a tintype taken when he was younger, in about 1860. It is still in its original case though and I would have to take it apart to get the tintype out of it.

About the massacre, when it took place in 1838, Marshal was only about 10 years old. His father Nehemiah Comstock was one of the militiamen involved, and so was Nehemiah's older brother Hiram - Marshal's namesake.

Which one of Marshal's children are you related to him through? My grandmother Ada May Comstock Moody was his youngest child. Mom knew several of his sons, I recall her mentioning Frank, Todd, Charles, and Felix. Frank is the only one I have a picture of, Mom knew him and his kids well.

The two pictures of Marshal are all I have of him. I have the earbobs and broach he gave Permelia, and a few pictures of her, and those are all the physical mementos of them I have. I expect that Frank, being the oldest, got most all the property, real and personal, when Marshal was killed.

Again, glad to hear from you. Welcome to Find A Grave! Take care and God Bless. - Dee
