I try to get my information as near correct as possible by researching many, and any, available resource. But, this is a hobby for me so, please, don't expect perfection. I'm always pleased and glad to receive corrections. Because this helps me to tweek that person's memorial to try to get it as near perfect as possible. I'm learning genealogy with each new memorial I create. I'm not a professional researcher. Please help me by including your source of information. I'm always glad to add information, change information when I'm wrong, and I will transfer management of memorials to anyone requesting me to do so whenever asked. It doesn't matter to me whether the memorial is your family or an interest you have in that particular surname.
My paternal lineage is Robertson and Staples and my maternal lineage is Johnston and Sampson.
Strangers in The Box
Come, look with me inside this drawer,
In this box I've often seen,
At the pictures, black and white,
Faces proud, still, and serene.
I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in the box,
Their names and all their memories,
Are lost among my socks.
I wonder what their lives were like,
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I'll never know their ways.
If only someone had taken time,
To tell, who, what, where, and when,
These faces of my heritage,
Would come to life again.
Could this become the fate,
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories,
Someday to be passed away?
Take time to save your stories,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks,
Or someday you and yours,
Could be strangers in the box.

No, unfortunately I've no idea where he was born- my grandmother (George's daughter in law) for whatever reason forbid any conversation about the "Old Gent"
the story from my dad was that George stowed away on a ship out of what is now Oslo- back then it was Christiana (i think) and arrived in the US and took an americanized name due to his accent
the censuses from 1900 & 1910 have him as being born in July 1854- he lived on MacMahan Island (georgetown, arrowsic area)and supposedly died there as well... altho it has been said he died on westport island.
in talking with the wife of one of margery's 2nd husband's children she said that he was supposedly buried in a pauper's grave at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath, but the ladies there at City Hall and cemetery association could find no record of him when I went home last and inquired- he did die Before the census of Jan 2, 1920 and while his 2nd wife Margery Burt Knight was pregnant with their last child Mabel-
the 1900 census has his immigration as 1885
the 1910 census reports immigration as 1888
George and Nellie (Learned) had only my grandfather- Harry Edgar Nelson- they were married Sept 2, 1892
He married Margery 2-25-1913 and they had several kids which were taken by the state and scattered after george's death. the youngest she was pregnant with when he died- she was adopted by some family in Damariscotta and when the older kids were in the process of reuniting she wanted nothing to do with it- no idea what her name became.
I don't have my papers- they're in storage but what i can remember of their names& from a scribble on a pad i made recently is-
Manford H (born 1915), Clinton A, Florence, Mabel there were actually 5 or 6 if i remember correctly~ there was a myrtle but i believe she was margery's daughter that was adopted by margery's parents (and george was not the father of)
i'll keep looking- i have info everywhere due to a couple of moves during my searchings~ and if i find the concrete names i'll let you know | | |
