Bio Photo An avid genealogist, I have been researching my family tree for many years. Welcome all contact from my far flung cousins and encourage them all to get involved and learn about their family history.

Main family that I am interested in are the SHANAHANs from County Tipperary and County Limerick. If you have Shanahans from these areas in Ireland I'd love to hear from you!

Little Luby's tombstone
The stone looks so good! Did you clean it? I would be glad to transfer the memorial to you if you want.

Thank you for the wonderful information you provided for your 2nd Great Aunt. Since she is a relative of yours even outside the Find A Grave guidelines I transferred her to you. Good luck in your research! Take care - Cindy

Find A Grave Memorial# 72797865
Thank you for the information on James Lynch. Unfortunately I don't know much about him. I found his obit and added him to Find A Grave because he lived in the neighborhood I grew up in and his funeral was at the church I attended as a child - Sacred Heart - which is actually on West 51st street not West 31st Street as the article says. Also, he is buried at Calvary Cemetery where a lot of my relatives are buried. Thanks again for your input.

RE: Gen. William E Dougherty
It was a nice day today, so I decided to go out to the cemetery. I had no problem finding William E Dougherty's tombstone. I looked at and touched all sides of the stone. There is no inscription for Mariah and/or Louis at Section OS, Row 82, Site 5 (or 7 if there was a 7). The stones to the left and right in the same row (emphasis on "same") are for Houston Evans [Section OS, Row 84, Site 1] and Mary Burton [Section OS, Row 82, Site 3]. Row 84 for Houston Evans is not a typographical error. It's what drives me nuts about Section OS. I'm sorry, but there is no stone or inscription for me to photograph for Mariah and/or Louis. I did get the GPS coordinates so you can see exactly where William and probably Mariah and Louis are buried. I tried several mapping sites and Bing maps came up with the best location. The tombstone is to the immediate left of the tip of the orange pin on the Bing map. 37.799744, -122.463878 The minus sign in front of the 122 is important.

RE: Gen. William E Dougherty - Part II

Actually, there is one other possibility and I should get it out before I forget. William's stone is not "government issue". It's a custom stone. I know that burials can take place, but if the stone is not "government issue", I am pretty sure the government won't put an inscription on it. It's up to the family, friends, etc. I've been going back to one custom stone for months waiting for an inscription. There is a temporary marker, but the stone itself is unchanged. Another person saw one of my photos and got mad because the custom stone was sinking into the ground. He found out the government wouldn't touch it because it wasn't "government issue". It was up to the family to fix it. If Mariah and Louis' names don't show up, this could be why. The family either didn't do it or they thought the government would take care of it. We'll see.

RE: Gen. William E Dougherty
Hi Kathy,

When I saw that your request was located in Section OS, I had to groan. While every other section of the cemetery is laid out in perfect numerical sequence, Section OS has no logical order whatsoever. I've even asked the landscaping staff if there is some secret they could share with me to make finding a given plot with some kind of ease. There is no secret. However there is enough detail in William's photo that I think I can find it again.

I can see that Mariah and Louis are both in the VA gravesite locator, but I'm not sure there is any engraving on a stone for them in the cemetery. Because there is no logic to Section OS, I've been working my way through that section. I walk behind the row I'm photographing looking for inscriptions on the back and then I walk in front of the row, taking pictures as I go. I think if Mariah and Louis were there, I'd already have their photos. I know I'm not perfect, so I will go back and take a look sometime after Christmas.

I'm not concerned about what the site number is. They will either be right next to each other or there will be multiple inscriptions on one stone. Given the numbers we have, I would have expected William and Louis' inscriptions to be on one side and Mariah's to be on the back or on the bottom of the front. We'll find out.

RE: Shanahan-Holy Name
thanks not a problem on this end. Don't know if you know this there is a Poor section in the Cemetery I would presume it is like a potters field no stones just home made crosses. She may have had only enough to purchase the grave at the time. I am finding alot of my family with no headstones as well no money.
be well
