The Recording of a Cemetery
by Thelma Greene Reagan
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where others cried
For Loved Ones whose lives are stilled.
Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In a heartbreak of the ages.
Today we saw there the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.
Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lied beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.
Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.
Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

Thanks for the message about possible first wife for Oley Evans. I placed a note in the bio for Oley and will try to find confirmation and then I will do a link.

Susan Barnett was married three times: first to Taylor Evans in 1867. They had 10 sons and a daughter. He died of blood poisoning in 1893. She then married George Dillion in 1898 but he died 4 yrs later. In 1903 she married Isaac Hines. Her death record indicates he was still living when she died. It is available at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=1435068&Type=Death

Noticed you added the photo of Stanley Everett Green (Memorial #36121166) to his page. Was wondering if you are kin to him or have contact with any of his sibling's descendants ?
Stanley was the school teacher here in Avon (Kennekeet), NC for 14 yrs. I've been reading his book Kinnakeet Adventure and doing research on him and the villagers that are mentioned.
Anyways, sure would love to get in touch with some of his family.
Thanks so much !
