RE: Diana Howland Monfore's obit
Hi Eleanor,

The obituary that I included on Diana A. (Howland) Monfore's Find-A-Grave page was from a photocopy that I received from a grandaunt of Diana's obituary clipping, which was probably from the Springfield, SD, newspaper, and is copied verbatim. Similarly, the biography of her husband, Peter Monfore, written by her grandson Fred H. Monfore (my 1st cousin 3x removed) claimed that Diana was the eldest of nine children, the other eight being brothers who all died in the (ostensible) cholera epidemic when she was sixteen. Again, this article was copied verbatim from its source (which is cited), but these two articles do not represent the sum total of my research into their family.

According to my research, Diana was the second child of Isaac Howland and Amanda Bellows. She had an elder sister named Adeline, who died 10 Apr 1830, age 2y, 3m, 8d, and is interred in the Howland Hill Cemetery (Source: After Diana, I have recorded that Isaac and Amanda had the following children (Source:
Delana Howland, F, died 3 Sep 1847, age 13 (b. Abt 1834), from Typhus Dysentery
Avery Howland, M, died 20 Sep 1847, age 9 (b. Abt 1838), from Typhus Dysentery
Marion Howland, M, died 4 Sep 1847, age 5 (b. Abt 1842), from Typhus Dysentery
Caroline Howland, F, died 30 Aug 1847, age 3 (b. Abt 1844), from Typhus Dysentery
This same source also identifies the death of Amanda (Bellows) Monfore as 16 Sep 1847, and the death of William Howland (father of Isaac) as 27 Aug 1847, both from Typhus Dysentery.

From census records, I have been able to identify the following children of Isaac Howland and his second wife, Emily Howland (b. Abt 1829, Massachusetts):
Mary E. Howland (b. Abt 1849, Lisle, Broome Co., NY)
Avery M. Howland (b. 8 Mar 1851, Lisle, Broome Co., NY); m. (Abt 1873) Elizabeth (b. 15 Nov 1856, NY); 3 children
Adeline Howland (b. Abt 1853, Lisle, Broome Co., NY)

I also have down that Isaac and Amanda were married 18 Jan 1830 in Eulalia Twp., Potter Co., PA, by John Taggart, Esq. (Source:, which date contradicts the information (given above) regarding Adeline (I) Howland, who died 10 Apr 1830 at the age of 2 years and was identified as a daughter of Isaac and Amanda.

The rest of my information about Isaac and Amanda comes from Franklyn Howland's book, A Brief Genealogical and Biographical History of Arthur, Henry, and John Howland, pp. 133 & 196, and from The Genealogical and Personal History of Northern Pennsylvania, Vol. II, p. 498.

Any further information that you can provide would be welcome.

Addison Howland
Hi Eleanor, Thank you for adding the photo for Addison Howland. You can never know for sure if someone is acutally there even though cemetery records say they are. But, when a volunteer gets a photo then there is no doubt. Thanks!
