I've been collecting family history for the last 35 years. My husband and I have deep Kansas roots. His are in Ottawa, Lincoln, and Cloud counties; mine are in Wabaunsee, Pottawatomie, and Shawnee counties. Our people have been in this state since 1857, and I find more little items about their everyday lives as I read the old weekly newspapers on microfilm at the Kansas Historical Society's archives in Topeka. I post family trees at Rootsweb and Ancestry, and post obits on the surname pages at Rootsweb if I don't know the cemetery where the burial is.
I'm currently working on four projects: 1. Working with others to photograph Mount Hope Cemetery, one of the large city cemeteries in Topeka, Kansas. 2. Reading my way through the Cloud County, Kansas, Glasco Sun, sharing obits as I find them. Most connect to one of my husband's family lines. 3. Reading old issues of the Alma Signal/Enterprise, Wabaunsee County 4. Reading old issues of the Cherokee Sentinel, Crawford County, adding obits to the Cherokee cemetery.

 | RE: Lillie Mae McClaskey Elbs Hello again Cheryl, I will try not to bother you too much more as I appreciate the time you've taken to help. I have to question whether or not Lillie Elbs maiden name was McClaskey. Doing some research on her (thanks to the obit you posted) shows that she was married to Frederick Elbs and on the 1920 census for Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS her mother is living with them listed under the name Naomi Joy. The 1880 Topeka, KS census shows the Naomi McCoy family with Lillie as Lillie McCoy, age 5, which corresponds with her birth year of 1875. No father listed but Naomi's mother-in-law is living with them by the name of Phoebe McCoy. By the Robert Smith Family Tree on Ancestry.com, it appears that Naomi (Lillie's mother) was probably married several times.
I've tried checking Findagrave for Frederick Elbs and Naomi under the names Joy and McCoy but haven't found them. Though I see that Frederick Elbs owned the plot that Lillie is buried in.
I see that the McClaskey stone is shown with Lillie but was wondering if maybe she is just buried close to the McClaskey's. I appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Thanks so much, K. | | | K. Hyland Smith
 | RE: Mary Agnes & Horation McClaskey Thanks so much for posting the obits Cheryl. And thanks for catching my error on Eva Belle McClaskey. I mean't to ask that Daisy B.(McClaskey) McMahon, who shares the headstone with H.B. and Mary (Funk) McClaskey, be linked to them as she is their daughter. Their son, Gerald Dale McClaskey, married Birdie Estelle Stormer and their children were Eva Belle, as you know, and Gerald Clair McClaskey.
I haven't linked Lucy Elbs McClaskey to the family yet.
Mary Agnes (Funk) McClaskey is the youngest sister of my 2nd Great Grandmother. Thanks again, K. | | | K. Hyland Smith
 | Mary Agnes McClaskey Hello Cheryl, Thank you for posting photos of the McClaskey family in Mount Hope Cemetery. Could you please correct the info on Mary Agnes (Funk) McClaskey's dates to 1855 - 1925? I think the dates entered are those of her husband, Horatio Benner McClaskey, according to the stones. Thanks so much! K. | | | Marcina White-Wall
 | White Thanks for adding Trula and Fred's monument. I have been working on the White side of the family and still have a long way to go. Thanks so much! Marcina White-Wall | | | | [View all messages...] |
