Harriet Lane was ist cousin to my great-grandfather James Lane of Westmoreland Co.Pa.
Her brother James was the president's secretary.
Both Harriet and James were adopted by the president when their parents Elliot and Jane (the presidents sister) died. My grandfathers name was Gordon. He had a brother James Buchanan

I just wanted to thank you for the photo you added for the Lydia Hamilton Smith grave site in Lancaster. And it looks like it was a COLD day when you visited too!
I often visit the Hon. Thaddeus Stevens grave site at Shreiner Cemetery on Mulberry St. in Lancaster, but I haven't been over to St Mary's to try to find Mrs. Hamilton-Smith.
In fact I'd seen conflicting postings online as to whether she was actually laid to rest in Washington DC or Lancaster PA, so it's nice to know she is here.
Are you from Lancaster? Have you been to the Convention Center and seen her tavern and the cistern used in the Underground Railroad?
I'm going to try to make it to her grave site too now that I can use your photos as reference.
