Bio and Links
Bio Photo I started researching my family's history in January of 2009. I was amazed at what I had found in only 3 short months. I knew nothing other than names of my immediate family and their parents. Everything else was a mystery. I have now discovered so many things I never thought was possible. I have met many wonderful people while researching and try to help them with anything I can. I love going to cemeteries and looking not only for my family, but for those that can't visit or are located out of town. If someone can get to know their family and see where they are buried it helps to fill in those unanswered gaps. I explore both Buncombe County & Haywood County.

RE: Sue Smathers
Kasey, can I prevail upon your kindness yet again to connect my mother Sue Smathers to her parents' and siblings' memorials?

Parents
John Stokely Woody - 79129539
Vaughtie Ann Reynolds 81123647

Siblings that have memorials that I can find at this point:
Marcus Lafayette Woody - 43463616
Gertude Gertie Woody Waldroup 81123451
Rufus Woody - 124582713
Dempsey Woody - 81217353

Am I to understand that when you add her parents/ siblings to her memorial, they automatically get added to their memorials, or do you have to contact the other people who did those memorials, too??

I'll send other siblings as I find them; several were out of the region and I'll have to contact a cousin to see where they are buried.

Thank you SO much!

Thanks for connecting Almeada to her parents!

Yes, I know Rebecca quite well. The Texas cousins came up to NC every few years as I was growing up. She's helping me right now with my husband's genealogy. She also descends from Isaac on her grandmother's side as well as from Charley on her grandfather's side! A double Smathers - good stuff! Her mother was my first cousin, and a lot older than me, so Rebecca and I are closer to the same age. She came down from Manson on the Isaac side.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to start by uploading photos and have volunteered to get several this week. As I get better at that, then I'll progress to doing memorial pages. I'm really addicted to this site - I'm surf it all the time.

Btw, tomorrow is "Decoration Day" at Zion Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Bluff where you snapped the photo of my mother's headstone. It is an old time mountain tradition, you've probably heard of it. They have singing, and dinner on the grounds, and then decorate the graves with flowers. In the old days many of the women made them from crepe paper. I can remember seeing my mother do that when I was about 5 or 6, and she had several beautiful designs. Alan Jabbour, retired from the LIbrary of Congress, wrote a book about Decoration Days and it features several cemeteries in the southern Appalachians. I live 400 miles away, but wish I could be there tomorrow with my cousins who always go and decorate the graves of my family on my mother's side. Maybe one day you can plan to attend; it is a real slice of Americana that is fading. :-)

one more thing, lol
one more thing...you'll notice that Elwood, Almedia's brother, she are the only children that survived more than one year. I think there were five infants/toddlers that died. Can you imagine???? I wished I had asked Almedia what happened, but I didn't know about it until I was at the cemetery one day and saw all those grave stones. What a very hard thing for them to go through. Thanks for managing Almedia's memorial, she was a very good, hard working woman.

Also, I noticed you manage my cousin Almedia's memorial, and I noticed a few days ago she was NOT on her father's memorial or her mother's.

Her father was my great uncle, George Alfred Smathers 1878-1979 (lived to 101) and is buried in Morning Star Cemetery in Dutch Cove. His wife Daily G. Clark is also missing her name as a child I think. I don't know how to go about getting that fixed, since I'm new here. Is that something you can fix??

Her father George, was called Uncle Bruz and is on the cover of the Foxfire Book #7 hardback edition and is in the actual book, too along with my father Quay for shaped note singing, which is mentioned on my fathers memorial btw.

Anyway, Almedia took care of Uncle Bruz until the day he died, and she really needs to be on that memorial if you can add her.

Thanks! :-)

RE: Sue Smathers
Hi,

So you descend from Dutch Cove, too! ( I was raised there, too.) Have you traced yourself back to John and Mary Agner Smathers? If so, I descend from their son Charley. Which son do you come from - Charley, Levi, George, Isaac, or Jesse?

Thank you so much for making a page for my mother. I don't know who you are or why you did it? I live 400 miles away and found that June McClure had done one for my father in Canton, and it linked to the one you did of my mother. I don't know who the person was that put her picture on there either. This is all new to me, but I was so touched by it, I'm now going to volunteer and take photos and have already accepted 4 for this week. I hope to pay it forward. Thanks again. Liz Smathers-Shaw
