I just received an email from Angie Austin of Saline, she says her great-grandfather Charles BurkharDt changed his name to Burkhart without the d. She says the painted sign story I heard was amusing. I have asked her if she has any photos of the family. Anyway, this would explain Fred and George having no D in their last names.

I notice there are two parallel systems for the Burkhardt/Burkhart family. I spoke to their family genealogist, Sharon (Burkhardt) Mischakoff, about the confusion between the two spellings. She told me George and Fred Burkhardt set up a dry goods store and hired a painter to paint a sign. She says the painter accidentally misspelled the last name "Burkhart" it it was too difficult to have the sign repainted. (You can see an old photo on the internet showing a huge billboard size sign on the side of the building on southwest area of downtown Saline." Sharon told me Fred and George just gave up and started spelling their name Burkhart. I saw the census of 1870 and it shows Charles Burkhardt with his children, including George, spelled Burkhardt with a "d" and I also saw the marriage records of George Burkhardt-- on May 19, 1892, George Burkhardt married Margaret Hanson. He wrote down the name of his father as Charles F. Burkhardt. His mother: Maria Case. His father was a witness at the wedding; spelled again Charles F. Burkhardt, with a "d." In my opinion, George (who was a banker) was willing to spend the money to put up all new, matching grave stones for his family going all the way back. Perhaps it was his wife or one of his children that did this. Since his side of the family was spelling their name at that time without a d, that's how he spelled the family members' names. I would suggest that you leave up all your grave memorial sites, but add a note indicating that some of these people may have spelled their name with a "d" during their lives.

The Lady in Black
Zelma Hazel Hindson
Hi:

You asked me:

"Do you know if Zelma Hindson is the former Zelma Cooper?"

No, I don't. I didn't find anything with her maiden name on it. Sorry I couldn't help.

Regards,
TLIB

RE: Margaret Jordan
Thanks for the offer George, but no thanks.
My goal is to increase the possibility of connecting and to connect memorials rather than to control a whole lot of them.
