Retired from Delta Airlines as a Salt Lake City B-767 Captain in 2005. |
Since retiring eight years ago I've become hooked on genealogy! I've done the research and have completed about a dozen family histories for both my wife's and my own families. Our family trees have grown more branches than roots as a result of my research and it's hard to keep track of all of our newly found distant cousins. Thank heaven for computer programs!
I've been married to the former Connie Madsen of Ogden, UT since 1972 and we're currently living in Bountiful, UT. We have three children and five grandchildren at last count. I am the current administrator of the Utah Aviation Hall of Fame located at the Hill Aerospace Museum, Hill AFB, UT.

|Richard Ballhorn||RE: Silas Gilmore, Part II|
The 1940 US Census records Silas J Gilmore and wife Nell living in Gregg County, Texas where Kilgore is located in 1940 but that they had both lived in Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1935.
Silas lived in Iowa in 1880, South Dakota in 1905, was married in Ismay, Montana in 1908, lived in North Dakota in 1910, Missouri in 1920 and Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1930. All these records can be easily viewed through Familysearch.org. the free Mormon Genealogy website.
The 1908 marriage certificate makes it clear that Silas' parents were Henry Gilmore and Ellen Scarborough. His parents obituaries (father 1929 and mother 1933) mention Silas was living in Oklahoma and not Texas.
According to familysearch.org website, Silas Joseph Gilmore, born Iowa on Mar 29, 1886 (birth date is incorrect it should be 1876) died in Longview, Gregg County, Texas on Sept 28, 1945 and was buried in Longview on Sept 30, 1945.
Silas first wife, Nellie Lockwood Gilmore also born in 1876 in Iowa, died in Pawhuska, oklahoma in 1951 where she is buried. See her grave on the Find a Grave website.
With all due deference to your cousin's memory, there are no records that indicate Silas J Gilmore was living in Kilgore or elsewhere in Gregg County, Texas before 1935 or that he had lived there all his life.
|Richard Ballhorn||RE: Silas Gilmore|
The 1940 US Census record for S.J.Gilmore and new wife "Nell" living in Gregg, Texas, indicates they had both lived in Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1935 where they presumably met. It is rather odd that S.J's second wife was also named Nell.
The 1929 obituary (Everett, Washington)for Silas father, Henry, indicates Silas was living in Tuscalosa, Ok and the (Evertt, Washington) obituary of his mother in 1933 indicates that Silas was living in Pawhuska.
In 1940 S.J.s ex-wife, Nellie still lived there with two of her children. If both Silas and his new wife came from Pawhuska and moved not that far away, I expect may of the residents of Pawhuska would known that Silas had not died but rather had married Nell II or was living with her in Texas where they ran a tourist camp. Do you have any idea of when Nell II died?
Thanks for the information
|Richard Ballhorn||RE: Silas Gilmore|
Pat, This is the information I have on Silas J. Lockwood and his wife and family:
"Nellie" L. Lockwood (1876-1951) (died August 24, 1951) born in Greene County, Iowa on April 22, 1876, the twin of Junius.Grant Lockwood. She and Junius were the first of the six children of Russell B and Helen Ames Lockwood born in Iowa. She was living with her parents in Liberal, Lyon County, Iowa in 1900. On August 27, 1908, she married Silas J. Gilmore (1876-1933/40) in Ismay, Custer, Montana. Silas was born in Ida Grove Iowa, son of Henry A. and Ellen R. Scarborough of Logan, Ida, Iowa.
Silas was a carpenter and the family moved around the Midwest as can be seen by the different places in which their children were born. The 1940 US Census records that Nellie (63), Junius (30) and Martha (24) were living in Ward 1, Pawhuska City, Osage, Oklahoma. Silas had died since the 1930 US Census as Nellie is listed as a widow. Junius is working at a theatre and Martha at hairdresser. As Silas is mentioned as surviving his mother in 1933 he must have died in the period 1933-40
(a) Junius James (1909-1971) born September 24, 1909 at Plevna, Montana. He was likely named after Nellie's twin brother, Junius Grant Lockwood. Junius J. (32) joined the US Army on January 18, 1942 as a warrant officer. At the time of enlistment, Junius was single, 5 foot 3 inches and weighed 122 pounds and had 3 years of high school and was working as an electrician. He married Gertrude Irene Larison and died February 24, 1971 and is buried at Arlington Memory Gardens, Oklahoma City. She died in Edmond, Oklahoma on Feb 12, 1989 and is buried with Junius in the Arlington Memory Gardens.
(b) Chrystal Clair (1911-?), born at Sioux City, Iowa
(c) Martha Ellen (1915-?) born at South Sioux, Nebraska
There is a record of Franklin Lindsey Adams Whisenhunt, born Feb 8, 1906, marrying a Martha Ellen Gilmore on July 20, 1979, a second marriage for him, in Oklahoma City. He died on December 29, 1981 and was buried in Pruitt Cemetery, Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma.
There are two listings for the Gilmore's in the 1910 US census. One indicates that Nellie and the infant Junius were living in School District 8, Custer, Montana. Nellie's oldest sister, Norah Lockwood, (43) was living nearby and teaching school. The other indicates that Silas (34), Nellie (34) and Junius James (6 months) were residing at Reeder, Adams County, North Dakota where Silas was a railway worker. It may be that Silas, as head of the household, listed his wife and son as living with him, even though they were still living in Montana possibly as he didn't know if they would be enumerated there.
The 1919 obituary for Sarah Helen Lockwood, Nellie's mother, indicates that Nellie was living in Richland, Missouri and the 1920 US Census records Silas (43), Nellie (42), Junius (10), Chrystal (8) and Martha (4) as living in Auglaize, Camden County, Missouri. The 1930 US Census indicates that Silas J. (54), Nellie G (53), Junius J. (20), Chrystal C. (18) and Martha E. (14) Gilmore lived in Pawhuska, Osage, Oklahoma. Silas was a carpenter and Nellie did sewing. Junius worked as an electrician in a theatre and Chrystal was working as sales clerk in a candy shop.
The 1940 US Census records that Nellie (63) was now a widow and keeping house and living with son, Junius (30), who worked in a movie theatre and daughter, Martha Ellen (24), beauty operator in a beauty shop, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Daughter Chrystal Claire is not living with them and may have already married as no separate record for her can be found. Silas J had died in the 1930-40 period.
Cemetery records indicate that Nellie L. Gilmore died on August 24, 1951 at age 77 and was buried in the Pawhuska City Cemetery, Sec 7 Rw 9, Pawhuska, Osage County, Oklahoma.
A Silas A Gilmore, born July 26, 1879, died at Tulsa, Oklahoma, in February 1968. However this birth date is three/four years later than the age recorded for Silas J. in several census records.
|Richard Ballhorn||Silas Gilmore|
My great aunt, Nellie Lockwood, married Silas Gilmore, son of the Ellen and Henry Gilmore buried in the GAR cemetery in Snohomish Co., Washington. Nellie died in 1951 in Pawhuska, Ok. where she is buried. See Find a Grave.Silas died in the 1933-40 period but his date of death and place of burial is not known.
Nellie and Silas had three children: Junius J. Gilmore (1909-1971),Chrystal Clair and Martha Ellen. Junius and his wife are buried in Oklahoma City, see Find a Grave. However, I have no information on the daughters except for the information in the 1930 and 1940 censuses.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information on Nellie and Silas Gilmore, their children and descendants.

I was very fortunate to be able to talk to one of the caretakers of the cemetery today. His parents keep the records! The mother of the caretaker came to the cemetery and was able to show me where Laura was buried. There are mounds but sadly no gravestone. I wish we could have done more! Jackie
|ddbooth||RE: Gilmore's in Pelham, MA|
It looks like you're looking for Gilmores in Pelham, MA. I am in Amherst, NH. There is a Pelham in NH. If that's the one, I'll put it on my "to do" list.
