I am 39 and I have had a passion for searching for my family since I was 16. That was when I found out the great grandpa I always knew was actually my step-great grandfather. I then began to search for the mystery man that was not talked about. Over the years I have been told that I was one of the youngest people to ever want to do this. Most people start when they retire. To my benefit, I actually have been able to talk to living people who actually knew him and it just started my desire to find out more.|
I have since then, married my husband Reggie (hit the 20 year anniversary) had two wonderful little boys and continued to search. I now have a computer, lots of data, lots of pictures and drive my family crazy with my requests to visit graveyards and libraries.
I have passed my passion on to my boys, who now know the complete history of our family and how we came to be. We have used our information for study in school and my children can relate to history in a whole new way. Having connections with the past makes it more interesting for them.
I am thankful to everyone who volunteers to help others in their quest to find their orgins.

|Joan Acord||Eliza Bailey|
Cathy: I am having the most difficult time trying to locate my father's family. Although his name is William L. Acord,(born 1906 although he claims it was 1904) he was raised as a foster child by the "Bailey" family and used that name growing up. His mother died when he was 2 (abt.1906)and her name was Eliza (or Elizabeth) Plumley. I am so curious if there's a connection between Eliza Bailey and Eliza Plumley .... or the Acord's and the Bailey's? I don't have any information on the Bailey family that raised him however he met his 2 half sisters at about 21 yrs. of age and they informed him that his father was William Acord. Both his half sisters were much older than him ... by about 15 years or so.
I requested a copy of his birth certificate and it lists him as the 7th child born to Eliza J. Plumley in 1906. She had him in a "Poor House" and no father was listed ... or a name given. My father began using the Acord name when he turned 21 based on the information his 2 half sisters shared with him. One of his half sisters was married to Sam Cozart and Sam's parents were John Cozart and Elvira Acord. Sam's grandfather was John Acord.
I know this is all so confusing but I just don't know how to go about searching his family tree. Any suggestions you can give me would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Joan

Hi. I see you posted a picture of this cemetery in Beckley. I have used the map on the memorial site and have driven all over looking for it. Can't find it. Do you have better directions for me? Thanks.

Bernice or Burnice? Do you know? I can't make out the dates, but looks like B 1906, D 1976, maybe?
|Kitty Lusker||Samuel Austin Acord|
Do you know why there are two records for him?
|Kitty Lusker||Peggy Jean Acord|
Cathy, this baby's headstone reads Peggy JENE Acord. I know mistakes are often made on the headstone -- do you know which is correct?

Thank you for posting all these memorials for Acord Mountain Cemetery. I guess we would be considered "kissin cousins"; my name is Kitty Acord Lusker, and I grew up in Cranberry, near Beckley. My line descends through Robert "Cuddy" Acord, brother to John "Old Jack."
Anyway -- I visited Acord Mountain a couple of weeks ago, and took lots of photos. I am adding them to the memorials you posted -- and I notice a couple of discrepancies. If you have no objections, I will post them here. Please don't be annoyed -- I know only too well how easy it is to have a discrepany, from personal experience, particularly when you are posting a bnch of memorials.
Here is the first:
Janice Kay Acord -- could not be the mother of Violet Collins.
HI, my NAME IS George Wilcox of Ashe County ,North Carolina ,My mother is Francie Caroline Smith ,DAUGHTER OF George and Jessie Acord Smith.Wilbert Acord is my Great Grandpa,My Grandma Jessie's dad.I have a picture of him and Grandma Francis Cook Acord standing behind their house in front of her rose bush.I have been trying to find out about where the name "Acord" came from,do you have any clue?my stories from my grandma are different from everyone else's.John 'Old Jack" Acord,according to my grandma ,his mother came from Germany and on through to settle in America and she was captured by Sioux Indians and rescued by a Comanche warrior,son of a Comanche Chief, then later married and she told me that is where the Acord name came from,any clue if this is hearsay?,or fact.?
