Wrong father for Henry Pratt
Elizabeth Pratt, born about1786 of Bedford County, Virginia and died in 1827 in Floyd County, KY, was the daughter of Sarah Hall and James Pratt, born 25 Mar 1764 in Culpepper Co., VA and died in 8 Oct 1854 in Carter County, KY, son of Thomas Pratt, Sr. and Mary Ann Unknown. Mother of Henry Pratt.

James was apparently married three times.

Wife – 1: Sarah Hall Born: 1778 in Dutchess, New York Died: 1810 Montgomery, Virginia Children: Elizabeth Pratt, Born: 1790 in Bedford County, Virginia Died: 1827 in Floyd Co., KY - Elizabeth Pratt had Henry Pratt out of wedlock. His real father was Henry Witt. Henry Witt died on the same day Henry Pratt was born. This has been verified by way of DNA testing by a Pratt cousin of mine who is a Genealogist. His findings have been published in a genealogy book by the Genealogy Society for which have a copy. Not long after Elizabeth had Henry, she married John Huff in 1810 in Patrick, Virginia who was first married to Frances "Fanny" Thompson. So this line of my Pratt lineage should have borne the surname “Witt”. My mother was a Pratt from eastern Kentucky.

Wife – 2: Sarah Littrell Born: 08 Mar 1776 in St Stephens Parish, Northumberland, Virginia, and died 1805. They were married 30 Jul 1799 in Botetourt, Virginia. James and Sarah had no record of any children. She died young.

Wife – 3: Rebecca Harrell Wright Born: 04 Feb 1791 in Virginia and Died: 20 Aug 1857 in Red Bush, Johnson Co., Kentucky. Rebecca and James had the following children: 1. Enoch Pratt B: 1828 in Johnson Co., KY Died: 1860 in Johnson Co., KY. Enoch was married to Elizabeth Walker. 2. Rena Elizabeth Pratt Born: May 1832 in Johnson Co., KY and Died: 1857, She married Levi Pennington 10 Oct 1851in Johnson Co., Kentucky. 3. Nancy Ann Pratt Born: Oct 1843 in Johnson Co., Kentucky. Nancy married Levi in 1862 in Johnson Co., Kentucky.

Many on genealogy sites have confused the two Elizabeth’s as Henry’s mother using Rena
(First name left out) Elizabeth Pratt. Then it will show Henry born before his mom was.

I can imagine this major change will have an impact on everyone’s family trees. When I found this out two years ago I had to make a major change to my Family Tree Maker software. It’s no fun, but I wanted everything correct. I have Henry Witt’s family lineage way back. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email at
