Bio and Links
Bio Photo I have been on and off as a genealogist since 1990, collected resources and old family photos on both of my parents' family lines. About 92% of my family lines had immigrated to America before the American Revolution.

My father's family lines in Maryland: Barber, Burroughs/Burriss, Burrus/Bary (France), Ricketts, Beall, Reitz (Germany), Mullican, Nicholson, Williams, Rine, Bean, Johnson, Trail, Lewis, Holland, Walker, Clay, Northcraft, Cheney and others.

My mother's family lines in Virginia: Joseph, Coffelt, Arey, Nester, Duffy, Guyer, Coffman, Hollar, Nicely, Shifflett, Miley, Helsley, Rinker, Dake, Rawley, Stowers, Briant, Miller, Dillinger, Waggoner, Carle and others.

Johnny William Barber, Alan Barber and I, each of us had a Y-chomosome test done by Family Tree DNA who informed us that we are a perfect 37/37 match.

RE: John Coffelt (1813 - 1895)
Bill,

I found an obit for Rebecca Coffelt (d 1896) and a wedding write-up for Lucy Virginia Coffelt and Joseph F Hottel, and posted them. I didn't find an obit for Christina but my search was brief.

You can search in "Chronicling America" (CA) newspapers. First narrow the search to Virginia newspapers. Search on "Coffelt" and any known variations. (CA won't allow wild-card searches). Then sort the results by date and scroll through to the year you're looking for and ignore papers from the wrong cities.

Sometimes word searches don't work because the characters aren't recognized. In that case you might search on her maiden name (often mentioned in obits). Or, since you know the date she died, go to the next issues of the local paper and "read" them and hope you find it.

My family surname is spelled various ways. I knew that my Missouri great grandfather visited Roanoke relatives in 1897, but I couldn't find it by searching the Roanoke paper for his surname. So I searched on his sister's married surname and found it. They had spelled his name the way Virginia relatives spell it.

I use a digital image editing program called GIMP to tidy up. Most CA images are dark and not level. I typically use the GIMP functions in this order: Whiten; straighten; enhance if needed (darkens and sharpens text); erase old borders; enlarge the canvas; add credits and date; crop; add border. Some obits are too big to download in one piece, so you have to download pieces, clean them up, and digitally reattach them.

Happy hunting!

Hollars in Hollar Cemetery
Sorry I dont know how I made duplicates when yours were there first. I always check first before I do that, but somehow I must not have that time. I have added the links you suggested, but if you want me to delete mine since yours were there first, let me know.

RE: Albert Ricketts
Bill,
Does Guy Burroughs have another name that may be on his headstone? I have walked the entire cemetery, and cannot find GUY or Bertram. I checked the Rock Cemetery listing for all interred, and those two names are not on the list. Is it possible they are interred in another Rockville Cemetery?
