Bio Photo Here I am ... search'n for grave markers in a remote cemetery & drive'n my ATW (All Terrain Walker)

I have recently passed a photo threshold ... over 1,000 photo requests fulfilled ... an accomplishment of which I am very pleased. Age and the cost of traveling to cemeteries on my 'beat' has slowed me down; but I still get out to make the rounds from time to time ... solely at my pace.

Anyone should feel free to 'grab' the photos of grave markers which I own (& have posted to the Find a Grave memorials) for use in personal family trees or within a venue other than FaG; and, in such event, credit to my ownership, while appreciated, is not necessary. That being said, I do make it a policy NOT to e-mail copies of original images (to which I own proprietary rights) directly to anyone.

Sorry ...

Alma Jones Colwell
That's great. What is the relation between Alma and your great-grandmother? Alma was my great grandmother's sister.

RE: A.J. Hughes
Ha ha...we're doing the same things. I even went through the entire 1870 Hood County Texas census looking for any Hughes/Hughs...since I don't have an 1870 Census record for S.L. Hughes. (Didn't find one, by the way.)
Happy hunting!

RE: A.J. Hughes
Have been in touch with the woman who created the Find A Grave for Samuel Lafayette Hughes. Here is her response:
"My information on his parents came from his Texas death certificate (see attached). I'll be happy to change the listing and list the death certificate information in the notes section. You probably have much more information that points to the correct name of his parents. Always happy to get clarification. I am not family, so have not done further extensive research on him. My listings are definitely "works in progress" and I am always happy for corrections, additions or transfer requests.

I wouldn't suggest any annotation changes until I could be more SURE about this, but...

RE: A.J. Hughes
Yes...another dilemma. The Tennessee reference I assumed was a mistake...William and Jane born in TN. The informant - Isaac Hughes - I can't track. Coincidence of same last name maybe, as opposed to family? But given that Kevin Dolin, who shared info with me, also has a photo of SL which included AJ and ABSOLUTELY positively is Mary (even though Dolin has the wrong maiden name taken from someone else's family tree). But for me, the obit is fact...that it lists S.L. Hughes of Tolar, Texas as a survivor. A family member supplied that info...
Sigh. I wish it could be more straight forward. Have to keep working it out. Of course, will let you know if I find anything relevatory.

RE: A.J. Hughes
Hello. It's been awhile, but I was contacted about E.E. Hughes and was able to confirm that this is him
This led me to an article in the El Dorado Daily Repulican - an obit of A.J. I had not seen before - that gave the death date/location for E.E.
Stunned that this stuff continues to be revealed.
Hope all is well with you.
Transcript of obit:
El Dorado Daily Republican (El Dorado, Kansas) Sat, Mar 15, 1913 Page 3
Andrew J. Hughs, age sixty-either years, eight months and one day, departed this life at three o'clock Monday morning,
March 10, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. A. Rutherford, seven miles south of El Dorado.

He was born in Dallas county, Texas, June 9, 1844, and came to Butler country, Kansas in 1868. He was married to Mary C. Fern (sic) December 14, 1870. To this union were born two children, Edward E., who died in Oklahoma,
November 19, 1894, and one daughter, Mrs. T. A. Rutherford, with whom he had made his home the past four months.

Mr. Hughs had been in failing health the past six years. About two months ago he had a severe attack of the grip from which he never regained his strength.

Mr. and Mrs. Hughs spent most of their lives on a farm seven miles southwest of Augusta. In the fall of 1903 they moved to the Thomas Sumner farm seven miles south of El Dorado. There they resided until September, 1911, when they moved to Ringwood, Okla., where Mrs. Hughs died April 14, 1912.

At the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted in the Confederate army in which he served four years.

Twenty-seven years ago he united with the Methodist church and has since lived a consistent Christian life.

Besides his daughter, those left to mourn his loss are his six grandchildren, one brother, S. L. Hughs of Tolar, Texas, a large number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Rev. Bollinger of El Dorado conducted the funeral services at the house at 10:00 o'clock Tuesday, March 11, and the remains were laid to rest in the West cemetery at El Dorado.

Mattie Jane Satterwhite Teer Jones
On Mattie's Find A Grave page it states that the connection between her and John M Teer has not been proven. His death certificate is in Nacogdoches County, Texas. He died 9 May 1935 from injuries he received in a traffic accident on 8 May 1935. Ironically, his wife, Irene Hoffman Teer, showed his birth year as 1892. The calculator says too far past his father's death. The 1889 shown on the marker would be more in line with his death. Thank you again for walking the cemeteries...Mary McGrede Martinez
