There has to be a court record in Bedford. But in those days, you didn't have to be "insane" to be in the state hospital. His wife was gone, he was living with his daughter, maybe because of the stroke, she couldn't take care of him anymore, or maybe the stroke made him violent. They didn't have nursing homes then. His death certificate does say he had "atheromatous degeneration of the cerebral arteries with secondary atrophy of brain cells". People who were slow, had dons syndrome were often called imbeciles. It was a different time.
