I was born and raised in Marion, AL. My father's family came from SC and settled in North Perry County and nearby Bibb County in the early 1800s. Among my paternal ancestors are Moore, Mitchell, Barnes, Hartley, Lake, and Hare. My ancestors married Breland, Graves, Colburn, Stevens, and others. Most are buried at Mt Ivah and Salem cemeteries in North Perry Co. Some migrated to MS and TX.

My mother's family came from VA and SC in the early 1800s and settled in Perry and Hale County. Among my maternal ancestors are Wood, Harper, Bondurant, Smith, Payne, Blackburn, Wyatt and others. They married Crawford, Christenberry, Ramey, Williams and others. They are buried in various cemeteries in Perry and Hale County.

If I have set up some of your ancestors, and you want changes made or the graves transferred to you, I will be happy to do so.

Incorrect Name
Dear Ms.Summerlin:
I see you still have the incorrect name on the listing for my great-grandfather's grave. It should be Jacob Eli "Jake" Colburn. There is no documentation that suggests nor do I have personal knowledge that he was ever known as Jacob Elijah "Jack" Colburn.
This one mistake is causing so many people who are researching their genealogy just on the computer, without the benefit of having known "Big Papa" and/or who are unable to actually go to the cemetery and/or physically research for themselves, to continuously perpetuate this inaccuracy. Please make this correction as soon as you possibly can.

Thank you,
Cathy Oleta Ingram Alexander

I just wanted to say thank you for the information on my great, great grandfather. I had never found any information this far back and am excited to find this. My family is from Tate County Mississippi. My grandfather was Robert Taylor Moore. I have information on my mother's side that goes back to Madison County, AL and now I find my father's side goes back to Alabama also. Thank again.

William Henry Evans
Thank you for your questions about Henry Evans and family. I hope something of this helps. You have certainly peaked my interest. I have not pursued the Evans Hartley connection as yet since they are not in my direct line, but Henry Evans crosses my line where he married Mary Tubbs, daughter of Carter and Pauline Tubbs.

I have a transcript of the cemetery done 5/1/1979 by my genealogy mentor Melvia O. Johnston Gray in her handwriting that she gave me in 1980. She was a meticulous record keeper and a stickler for accuracy when surveying cemeteries and recording the data. Her philosophy was that anyone can write a work of fiction; only the diligent work to record history accurately. I concur with that and do my best to follow it---bearing in mind I am still human and I do make mistakes---though happily learn from and correct them when found.

On that list in order are the following as written by her:

Wife: Mary Evans (daughter of Carter Tubbs)
15 Apr 1853
14 Nov 1926

Husband: William H(enry)Evans (called "Hen", son of Jack and Katy Hartley Evans)
12 Jan 1853
5 June 1912

Son: B. F(rank)Evans
23 Apr 1874
14 Oct 1926

Next to B. F. Evans is the grave of Henry J. Evans born May 1 1884 died 4/10/1914. She has no note or additional information on this one other than the fact that he is buried next to the other 3 Evans'.

I have some notes that I will dig up and see if I have any other information I have not yet added to my database on the Evans or Hartley family and let you know. I love a good mystery! Unfortunately, that is what makes this so addictive!

Thank you again for all the good work you do on the site.
