I'm updating the Chemainus Cemetery Records and Lavina Mary Travers Howe has 2 identical entries, one under Howe and one under Travers. Could you delete one, please? Thanks!

My mistake, that was not her obit. If you do run across that I will be happy to add. Thanks again!

Karen,

You sound like a very special friend. Thank you so much for sharing some thoughts about Aunt Judy - I'm so happy she had such wonderful friends. Thank you for looking after her grave site and for transferring to me - although it is really not necessary - it was obviously in good hands. I found an obit on line that I will add. Take care!

RE: Re: The Murdocks
Here is the reply that I received from my historian friend:

Betty: from all of the following information, I believe that James & Catherine Murdock are buried in Vernon Twp. Cemetery, Isabella Co. Clare, Michigan

Census:
1880 Isabella Co. Census - Vernon Twp.
# 2835 James Murdock, age 70 , farmer, born Scotland
# 2836 Catherine Murdock, age 69, keeping house, born Scotland
# 2837 Duncan Murdock (son) age 48, laborer

Vernon Twp Cemetery did not keep complete records when they first started burials in their cemetery. Because they lived in Vernon Twp. In 1880, I believe that they were are buried in this cemetery in unmarked graves.
According to Mrs. Josephine (Murdock) Callum of Clare - she had a sister Syzania Callum that died in Feb 1871 and she couldn't find the grave when she went out in the spring to look for it (From the Vernon Twp Records)
Murdock marriages:
1. 30 Dec 1885
John A. Murdock Bigfield Co. Wisconsin, age 27,
(Note: in 1885, many Clare lumberman followed the lumbering
Business to Wisconsin because the lumbering was slowing
Down around Clare.)
Josephine Cullum Clare, age 19 of Isabella Co, Vernon Twp,
Witnesses: Gertrude Murdock & A. C. Gordanier.
2. 5 Apr 1880 in Mt. Pleasant
Barbara Murdock, age 46 of Clare, born Restichough NB Canada
John Davis age 48, of Vernon, born Ireland, a farmer.
3. 22 Jan 1881
Mary Murdock, age 37 of Vernon Twp, Isabella Co, b. Restichough BC
Edgar Stevens of Clare, age 38, born Pittfield Ohio
4. 15 Oct 1886
Duncan C. Murdock of Vernon Twp. Age 54 farmer
Mary (Hubbell) Turnbull of Vernon age 35.
Murdock deaths
1. Duncan C. Murdock, married, age 67, cause Quick consumption, b. New Brunswick, farmer, parents unknown
2. Nancy Murdock, widowed, age 88, of Mt. Pleasant cause old age, b. New
York, parents Ejia & Clorasa Penwell.
3. From Isabella Co Web site: "Deaths A-F" Mrs. John (Murdock) Gordanier,
Had first funeral in Clare."

Me now: Since Duncan has a headstone in Cherry Grove, I'm not at all sure this is helpful...but it's the best I can do for you.

RE: James and Catherine Murdock
More sad news on the Murdock front... I looked for their obits again on CONDOR, the Central University of Michigan website that I use and www.newspapers.com. There just wasn't a newspaper to be found for January 1890 or first three weeks of May 1890. So there is no obit for either James or Catherine. My historian friend hasn't gotten back with me yet.

RE: James and Catherine Murdock
Sad news...Some of the city clerk's cemetery records were destroyed by fire. There was a walk through done to re-create the records. A walk through can only record what can be read on the headstone. Since I have been trying to add obits, I've run across interments that have no headstone or perhaps one that can't be read. I do add those people here. I'm trying to make as complete a list as possible. Not all the newspapers were saved on microfilm... I will check with a local historian friend to see what she can learn about James and Catherine. I'll get back with you as soon as I can.

RE: Welcome
Thank you Karen,

I hope that I am able to honor my father and keep up with his memorial as he would wish it to be done. I do plan on adding as much as possible to it for others to be able to research, find information and also find comfort as I am.

Thank you so much for doing/starting my father's memorial. It is greatly appreciated.
