Re: New Harmony Cemetery...Someone just assumed that since some of the graves at Mt. Zion were moved to New Harmony, all of them were (which was not true); and they made memorials for all of these people in the New Harmony cemetery. Not just the ALFORDs, but a lot of others as well. This has resulted in a lot of memorials at New Harmony that should not be there. I have been successful in getting some of these incorrect memorials deleted, but not all.

New Harmony is a very small cemetery and ALL the tombstones there have been photographed many times over. If you see a memorial in New Harmony, especially if it was relocated from somewhere else, and it doesn't have a photo of the grave, then there's a good chance that it is incorrect, that it shouldn't be in New Harmony. There were some burials there of people who don't have headstones, but these were direct burials.

There were 18 (known) ALFORD graves that were relocated from Mt. Zion Cemetery (from U. S. Corps of Engineers' Master Grave Disinternment / Reinternment Listing). These were:

Wade Hampton Alford, his wife Dora (Sanders), and daughter, Ella, were moved to Old Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson, SC.

James Berry Alford, his wife Emily (Masters), and two sons, William Jesse and John A., were moved to Cokesbury United Methodist Church cemetery in Hart Co., GA.

The other eleven (known) ALFORDs were moved to New Harmony Methodist Church in Hart Co. Hope this helps, if you are unsure about a burial at New Harmony, let me know and maybe I can help.

Re: Mt. Zion Cemetery...The correct name was Mt. Zion Methodist Church cemetery. The church was located on U. S. Hwy 29 in rural Hart County, a mile or less from the Savannah River on which the dam was built. (The highway changed direction after the dam was built and now runs toward the south and below the dam.) The road that the church was on is now called "OLD 29 HWY." (There is also a black church in Hart County called Zion CME Church. It is still in existence today.)

If you type in "mount zion church (historical), hart co, ga)" on Google and then click on the first entry, it will pull up a page with the lat. & long. and also a map of the area. I believe the actual site of the church is now under water.

RE: John Thomas Hewell
I now have more information on Janie Hewell Alford and Julius C. Alford. Are they related to you? Janie was my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

Do you intend to request that Find A Grave transfer the memorials to you since the contributor is apparently inactive? If not, I will request that they be transferred to me.

RE: John Thomas Hewell
Your message:

{ Do you know whether John Thomas Hewell is also the father of Janie Lou Hewell Alford, who is buried with her husband, Julius Caesar Alford in the Inman Methodist Church Cemetery? ]

I don't have her marriage information, but John Thomas did have a daughter Janie who was born Nov. 1878 per the 1900 census. For some reason I have not looked for her after 1900. I am about to rectify that right now. Thanks for the information. I would say that she is definitely his daughter. Priscilla Hobgood was her mother.
