Local man makes strides in genealogy

"GLADWIN COUNTY" Have a conversation with Tom Ladner and one thing becomes clear very quickly: Tom is not only an avid genealogist, historian and veteran, he is a wealth of information for anyone else who wants to take the same journey.

In fact, Ladner has been instrumental in developing and expanding a number of online resources for people who want to begin tracing their family lines here in Gladwin County.

Ladner has been involved in local genealogical and historical efforts for quite a few years. In fact, he was a catalyst in the historical culmination of the Beaverton Centennial Celebration. Later, Ladner was also a substantial contributor and author of the McKimmy family book.
In fact, through those efforts, Ladner traced the McKimmy origin back to Scotland and documented their migration to West Virginia and eventually up to north central Michigan.

He also recorded the Ladner surname back to Germany in the 1700s and then moved on to a multitude of other family trees back to Europe and elsewhere.

His participation in these endeavors eventually turned his research into something that people refer to as a "calling", and his colleagues began to recognize his tremendous efforts and how useful they were to historical research efforts county-wide.

"Tom was the driving force behind the research and input of the military portion of the book, `Beaverton: A Century In The Making.' He continues to have a passion with research of obituaries," said Judy Grant, an active member of multiple Gladwin County Societies and Committees. "He was a great help with the Cemetery Walk and various other projects. I'm sure he'll be available for the Gladwin County Sesquicentennial celebration. We'll be paying tribute to Marvel Secord and many others. We hope local residents will actively contribute when the time comes."

As Gladwin County Historical Society Photo Curator and someone who contributes to local genealogical web sites as well, Bob Frei noted that Ladner's ability to get lost in his research has been invaluable.

"Tom was amazing working on the Beaverton Centennial Celebration. When he looked through and transcribed the micro- films, Tom hardly made any errors whatsoever," said Frei. "While we were working together on the centennial committee, I'd make a bullet point list of objectives and Tom would work tirelessly, continuously, until something was finished. Tom is like a cat stalking it's prey when he's studying history."

Historical Museum Curator Tom Cummins echoed this sentiment.

"Tom's efforts are invaluable" he's very detail oriented," Cummins said. "Tom discovers things that others don't find."

Following his passion, Ladner has created, added to and utilized many web sites" both local and beyond, a number of which may be interesting to people trying to track their family's history.

First and foremost, Ladner has been a leading contributor to the Gladwin County Obituaries site spearheaded by Frei. This is the most extensive obituary site in the area and - unlike many sites of this nature" it's non-profit.

Ladner is also a wealth of knowledge for people who are not quite sure where to go when they're chasing down their family's history.

`Sons of The Union' is a site where people can trace family members who fought in the Civil War. It was through this site that Ladner found out that Marion and Francis McKimmy both battled in the Civil War.

`The Falconer of Stonebrook Manor' web page on Family Tree Maker really hooked Ladner on genealogy as well. He's attached 2,354 photos to this site and updated 142,274 names" including 43 U.S. presidents, H. H. Dow, the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, William the Conqueror and Charlemagne. {These stats are referring to the LMCB the big tree on Ancestry}

Ladner has also created sites with files of Gladwin County marriages and deaths from 1875-2000. As well, he's updated `Findagrave' with a whopping 3,596 area memorials, and the WWII Memorial Registry with hundreds of Gladwin County WWII veterans.

For people looking to research family history, Ladner also recommends `GeneaNet' which he says is a global gold mine. He also said that TribalPages is another web site where someone can start an electronic file of their family tree and expand on it.

A true history buff, Ladner says he is pleased with the recognition that Gladwin County has given its past through activities like the Beaverton Centennial celebration, the Gladwin County Historical Museum, the Carriage Festival and the expansion of the Gladwin County Library.

Ladner is a Beaverton High School graduate, a life-long Beaverton resident who has recently been living in Midland. After high school Tom spent three years stationed in Osan Air base, in the Republic of South Korea, where he meet his wife, Chong Ye.

You are welcome Tom.

The Mount Clemens Public Library web site would be a good place to start looking for the obits. mtclib.org, click on genealogy, check out the databases. If you need help, the Macomb County Genealogy Group will do look-ups for a very reasonable fee
(which helps maintain the collection).

Hi Tom ...

Can you access an obit from the Gladwin County Record for Lewis Monroe ... born (I think) in 1860 and died in November 1936. According to the library site, it was in the November 18, 1936 issue .. col. 6, page 1. If not, I'll go check it out myself sometime. Thank you very much!

His memorial is #109750999

RE: Re: Wilson & Wineman Memorials
Updates made - thanks Tom! I forgot to include Chas B. Wilson in my list. I was also trying to figure out if Mary Catherine Wilson's parents were John and Blanche so I could link them, but as I am unsure I will leave it for now.

Wilson's & Wineman's in Highland Cemetery
Hi Tom! Just wanted to let you know that I added Mary C., Mary E. & William A. Wilson, as well as Charles E. Wineman & Oliver E. Wineman to the Highland Cemetery this morning. I've posted all my Highland photos now - I'll have to get up that way and take some more soon. Thanks! Heather

RE: Wilson's in Highland Cemetery
The social security death index lists her date of death as May 25, 1979 in Macomb County, Michigan. I hope that helps!

Wilson's in Highland Cemetery
Tom - Can you check something for me? I uploaded a photo of the stone for Jack Glen Wilson (1930-1950) and read the obituary you posted. I then added memorials and stone photos for Blanche & John C. Wilson. John C. Wilson also died in 1950. Is there any chance he is the father that was killed in the accident and Jack Glen was the son who died 5 days later? If so, I can delete my memorial for John and get the family cleaned up and linked up. Thanks! Heather
