Documenting Civil War graves at Chattanooga National Cemetery and Marietta National Cemetery (using the original burial records).|
I would be glad to add bio, relationship links, etc. and link to you for genealogical purposes. I have many of these memorials in Virtual Cemeteries related by battle, military group, and where originally died and buried on the battlefield. I often times link soldiers together by regiment. There were lots of mistakes made on spelling of names, regiments, and death dates by the original quartermaster crews who buried men on the battlefield, the War Dept., and on through history by the Veterans Administration (VA), FAG on upload, headstone makers, etc. I am trying to account for all (that I can) who were killed in that awful war.
Tips for finding Civil War soldiers:
When searching for Civil War soldiers, try different spellings; back then it was common to spell one person's name several ways.
Figure out where he died or was killed and search the National Cemetery near that location where he died.
See the Veterans Administration web site to see if he is listed. http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 . There are many spelling errors so try different ways.
Try entering just the first three letters of the last name. Try entering just first initial of the first name. For example, Marietta National Cemetery typically had only first and second initials and last name, where Chattanooga National Cemetery typically listed the whole first name.
Jno for John
Wm for William
Chas for Charles
There are some "Unknowns" entered with just first and last initial. Others have a last name of "Unknown". Enter Unknown as last name on Findagrave in the Marietta and Chattanooga National Cemeteries to see if you can find him that way; sometimes there are hints such as regiment or state served, date of death, or where originally buried.
When I first started creating Virtual Cemeteries, the number of characters allowed was severely limiting, ergo, many abbreviations and other space saving short cuts. I plan to go back over my VCs someday and fix this now that >99k characters are allowed.
I would be glad to add family links or bio to any memorials I have entered or manage if you use the Edit tab and Suggest a correction link.

Ouch ... first time I tried doing it from my iPhone - will correct and thanks.
|Sue Leatherman||RE: Samuel D Miller, Civil War soldier|
Sorry there is nothing to identify this grave. He is buried alongside other Millers and he has a GAR marker so I took the photo anyway hoping that it is probably Samuel.

|Amanda ||James Medford 55529002|
I think that James Medford (55529002) is my 2x Great Grandfather....but I have a different birth year (but some death date that you have) I just wondered where you got the birth year?
I am doing some digging right now - perhaps I'm just wrong - but I just wanted to ask!!!
Thanks so much for your time!
