I am assuming that this is your great-grandfather. I am curious where you got the information about his being a captain and having been born in Alabama.

I am the great-great-great granddaughter of the Mr. Matthew Trice mentioned in the above article. I also show a James Harkrider on the 1860 census for my ancestor -- in Arkansas County, Arkansas.
Would love to communicate more to see if these are the same man. Hard to believe that there would be two men with the same name who lost a leg in the Civil War.
