I have enjoyed Find A Grave for only a short time and have located several thousand of my friends and relatives on here. Thank you to all of the wonderful people who took the time to create memorials and update them. Your hard work and time taken has not been wasted!
Recently I have been plagued by several suggestions asking me to add obituaries to some of the memorials I have created, and been reprimanded for not doing so. My reason is that obituaries are copyrighted material for which the copyright is held by the publisher of the newspaper from which they were "clipped".
Without specific WRITTEN permission from that editor, it is a violation of United States copyright law, and I will not do it. I spent too many years defending the United States and the laws that govern us. I have only posted two obituaries to my memorials because I hold the original creation copyright to them and they were published with my permission.
In the future, any "suggestions" to add obituaries to my memorials will just be ignored. Even if I transfer a memorial so you can post an obituary to it, it still has my name on it and I can be held liable so I will not transfer them. What I will do is delete them, including the photos I have taken, then you can create them again and add the illegal obituary. Good luck in Federal Court!
