Bio and Links
Bio Photo CORRECTIONS/SUGGESTIONS: If I've sent you an SAC, it is a suggestion or a question, it is not a demand. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to email me so that I may provide clarification or additional information (be sure to include the memorial number).

Please do not be offended if I ask you to provide your source for an edit suggestion you sent me as I try to validate every edit suggestion I receive.

On the very, very rare occasion I decline your edit, I will always include a detailed reason. HOWEVER, I have recently learned that sometimes the explanation (note) one adds to the declination does NOT go through or show up on the email notification one receives. Since I ALWAYS explain my reasons please don't hesitate to ask for detail in the event you only received a generic declination notice.

TRANSFERS - YES!!!!: I believe/hope that if you ask for the transfer, you genuinely care about the person/family/legacy or your dear friend. My goal is to find homes for all but my immediate family memorials - no need to send me your DNA to prove your relationship :)

Transfer Exceptions - Based on increasingly negative transfer experiences, I no longer transfer to contributors: who have burial unknown memorials created more than 30 days ago; who have created (and retain) duplicate memorials; whose user name is Anonymous; or contributors of less than 60 days.

DUPLICATE MEMORIALS: My gawd, such a gigantic issue.....but why? Mistakes happen. Creating one or two duplicate memorials is a mistake and your willingness to delete your errant duplicate(s) is genuinely appreciated (and expected). Creating a duplicate or multiple duplicate memorials and refusing to delete it/them (or ignoring requests to delete) is, without exception, unacceptable per FAG guidelines and common courtesy. Most contributors are willing to transfer, just ask! Keep in mind, it's quite likely you are not the only soul related to the person in the memorial.

Even if you didn't create the original memorial you may add photographs and documents (up to the limit or sponsor any memorial to add even more photos and documents).

Ultimately, FindAGrave WILL merge your duplicate memorial(s), and all of your "hard work", into the original memorial(s).

NAMING CONVENTIONS: Currently, the search engine does not process punctuation and spacing (see FAG guidelines), therefore in addition to FAG guidelines, I follow federal guidelines: no spaces in a surname (DeSmith instead of De Smith), no punctuation in any part of the name (ODell instead of O'Dell) other than a hyphen in a surname ONLY if legally recorded as such or displayed on the headstone. When a headstone's name is illegible or only displays a first or last name, Unknown is added to the empty field(s) (do not use ??? Smith or John J??). One cannot search without entering at least three letters of the surname (save for within a specific cemetery).

Use the middle name slot to add additional surnames (names from previous marriages, etc) that are not hyphenated, but displayed on the headstone/marker. Hearts, dancing feet, smiley faces, parentheses, exclamation points, in the name slots adversely affects the the search engine results. Use the bio section to add other names, previous marriage names, spelling variations, additional nicknames, AKAs, name change information and so on. Include ONLY the maiden name in the maiden name field.

Note - if you add Smith Jones, Smith-Jones, Smith//Jones, etc. to a surname slot, the search engine will ONLY pick up Smith.

To link family beyond parents or spouses:

< a href="">Name< /a>

Remove the space between < and a at the beginning, and the space between < and / at the end.

MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND DOCUMENTS: Please take care to select the correct option for the items you wish to attach to the memorial. Grave is ONLY to be used for photographs of the monument, headstone, marker, or specific location of an unmarked grave. If you do wish to add photos of the gate, sign, etc. do so under the "other" category (some users inadvertently use the "grave" option for all photographs and the cumulative affect often severely skews the percentage of memorials photographed for any given cemetery).

CALCULATING AGES: there are many freebie age calculators available online, thus when a headstone only includes death date, but includes "aged 7 years, 4 months, 13 days" one can accurately include a birth date (I generally include a note akin to "birth date calculated"). HOWEVER, when a headstone only includes the death date and an incomplete age, e.g., "died July 3, 1900, age 47" without knowing the months and/or days of the person's age at death, the birth year could have been 1853 OR 1852.

1. Receiving your edit decline because your 10 year old typo-riddled memorial is "coincidentally" up to date within 24 hours of my SAC. Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

2. Contributors who enter countless memorials with just a plot location - no names, no dates, no notes, just a sea of ----- memorials. How does a ----- memorial even qualify as a memorial? What is the benefit of a cemetery full of ----- memorials?....oh, wait, it helps with your numbers, groan.

3. "Airing dirty laundry" and/or including TMI on family memorials. I can't imagine anyone would like to be memorialized with a tag line of "cause of death: syphilis" or "they were burned so severely we didn't recognize them" or "tried to abort her own child"; nor do I find a memorial the appropriate place to detail how Uncle Joe beat his kids or how beloved Aunt Bea was married to three different men at the same time or that you never liked the person whose memorial you created or manage and you close with something ugly like "Karma's a b**ch". Respect for one, and their privacy shouldn't end at death.

4. Burial Unknown: Alas, a blatantly abused and sometimes misused feature. If you don't know where the person was buried, why create a memorial? Per FAG, the memorial in the actual burial location, regardless of when it was created, trumps the burial unknown memorial so please don't expect me to delete my cemetery memorial in favor of your old burial unknown memorial. Burial unknown memorials become duplicate memorials after 30 days, thus will be merged into the cemetery-based memorial by FindAGrave.

5. What's up with contributors who don't provide an email address and whose message page is disabled and, instead, instruct contributors to contact them through a memorial or avoid the subject completely? Red flags - alarm bells sounding..... Ugh, no thanks.

FindAGrave is an amazing tool providing ready access to a wealth of history and legacies and, ultimately, a means by which we may honor our ancestors and loved ones. It is a tool most successful when we all make a good faith effort to follow the basic rules and guidelines - and when we respect one another.

Hello, may we please have the honor of taking care of my Uncle's memorial? I just located his wife and I will link them, but it would be such an honor. Thank you. S

Below, for Apple/Appel, I meant to say that since different ages were shown...

For these and others in that cemetery, V.M.T. has been doing the in-depth research and lets me know if someone is not in the cemetery records, or is in them just once...

Since different are shown, it is possible they are two different people, although dying on the same day is sure a huge coincidence...

RE: Masonic Lawn Cemetery
You are welcome. I was a medical transcriptionist for 26 y4ars, retired last June and still feel the need to transcribe so this outlet is perfect for me. Willing to do more if you post them. Thank you for all you do for findagrave. This is a wonderful place.

Live Oak Cemetery
Lodi, San Joaquin Co, CA

What was the source of your information on the persons listed for this defunct cemetery? I didn't read all of the information about the cemetery before requesting a photo of certain graves.

I'm preparing an application for a lineage society and need to have source data.

Thank you.
