|John Mitchell||Cornelius O'Leary|
Hi Radman & Irene.
I'm the great great grandson of a Timothy O'Leary, born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1835. As a young man he went to Victoria, Australia for their gold rush, and then on to Otago, New Zealand for our gold rush in 1861 - where his descendants including me remain. Family tradition has it that the O'Learys fled County Cork after Timothy's grandfather was hanged on his farm by British soldiers - well before the potato famines.
Tradition also has it that the only 'distinguished' member of the family was a brother, who was a secretary to Abraham Lincoln. Checking the site 'mrlincolnswhitehouse.org' I see that there was only one O'Leary employed at the White House during the Lincoln administration - Cornelius, employed briefly as a doorman in 1865. Who is of course according to this obituary Sgt Cornelius....do you have a place of birth for him? Regards,
|Irene ||Cornelius O'Leary|
We have been trying to get information about our great-grandfather, Sgt. Cornelius O'Leary for a long time. The information you have on the Find A Grave Site was the most comprehensive we've found, however, we are trying to find any information regarding how to find his family in Ireland. We will be there in a few months and hope to do research. So far, we found a reference to Tipperary in his pension records. Do you have any other information which might help us?
Thanks so very much,
