I live in Virginia and work as a teacher librarian. I was a history major as an undergraduate. My uncle researched our family tree back to the 1750s and I have always been interested in family histories. I found this site when I was looking for the grave of Francis Lewis, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His home was in Whitestone, Queens, NYC. His family donated the land for the church I grew up in. Since finding this site I have looked up other people I am interested in.

Hi, Gellie,

Yes, I am currently writing a blog article about Cornwallis and his wife Jemima. It was something of a tragic love story, ending with her requesting a thorn bush to be planted over her grave because she had "died of a broken heart." I don't think Cornwallis ever quite recovered, and just tried to divert all his energies into military life to stifle the pain.

I recently learned that Horatio Gates had been on cordial terms with Simon Frazer prior to the war. Of course, this was not terribly uncommon among the British and Americans given their mutual participation in the French and Indian War. But these stories that bring out the civil-war-like aspects of the conflict also particularly fascinate me.

So what first got you interested in Cornwallis and Frazer? Also, who are some of your favorite Patriot commanders? To be honest, I think I probably would have been a Loyalist back in the day, although one certainly can never ascertain that sort of thing with any real accuracy!

Hi, Gellie,

I'm new on Find-a-Grave, so I'm honestly not sure how the friending process works, but I noticed we both have an interest in the American Revolution, and both left comments for Gen. Simon Frazer. So...if you'd like to be friends, that would be great!
