So Many Ancestors....So Little Time..
I was born in Rockingham County, N.C. a long time ago and have lived in VA. for quite some time.
I enjoy researching civil war soldiers and their families and live in the Heart of the Confederacy.
I enjoy painting with acrylics, especially Old Homeplaces..Beach Scenes..Old Depots, any OLD buildings and such!
I have been Following the Periwinkle in Henry County, VA. and surrounding areas for over 25 years and have enjoyed every minute. :O)
I'm a History Detective..

I have been trying to work on the Oxleys. My husband's 2nd great grandmother was Amanda Elizabeth Oxley. She was living with John Oxley and his 2nd wife Mary Mason in 1850(Amelia) and 1860 but on her familysearch.org document of her marriage to John R Hall in 1860 it says her parents are Nathaniel and Mary Oxley ("Polly" McBride). John and Nathaniel were brothers. Nathaniel had more children and daughters and John's 1st wife Rebecca Miles was maybe sick since she died in 1831. So I have surmised that Amanda was sent to live with them and help. I have been told that Amanda and John are buried in unmarked graves in Vermillion Cemetery in Athens, Mercer County, WV where they lived from about 1873. Okay, if I get real industrious I may go back with a small rake and see if I can find some more markers. I want to hike a portion of the trail that I didn't get to yesterday anyway. There were a couple of stones laying flat in the ground that weren't covered so I figured others like that would have been visible too.
On your other message about the Covington cemetery, there does appear to be a division between the Burgess and Covington burial area so maybe they are truly considered separate cemteries. | | | Stan Mitchell

Yes but, for whatever reason it's still showing as "pending approval". I guess maybe they're backed up with approval requests. Really not much to see in the photo and you'll see that the last paragraph in the description is very true. Absolutely, the house is still there, has had some additions and remodels over the years and I'll get you a photo of that as soon as I can. During my years at the local community college in Martinsville I worked part-time at the Draper/Prillaman homestead, mowing, painting, etc. to make a few bucks for gas, beer and other essentials. As it turned out I ended up (after graduating from college at VCU in Richmond) going to work for Prillaman Chemical Corp. in Martinsville and 36 years later I'm still working for them. We've been bought out twice, the Martinsville plant was closed about 11 years ago and now I drive 120 miles round trip everyday to the office in Jamestown, NC. I believe the stone under the husband's is supposed to be hers. I will try to get back out there soon to confirm and see if I can recognize any dates on the older stone. | Draper Cemetery - Dyers Store
Just an FYI, this cemetery is also known as Prillaman Cemetery (GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 36.76232, Longitude: -79.80038) also listed in the findagrave site. The Prillaman listing appears to have a complete listing of all burials along with photos of each and a couple of over all shots of the cemetery. I was just at the cemetery a few weeks ago can only be accessed with family permission and a key to a gate on the driveway entrance. These are all relatives of my best friend and fellow cemetery hunter whom I was with on Saturday when we discovered the Byrd and Davis cemeteries from my previous messages. | | | Stan Mitchell

Yep, I noticed those when posting the pictures. I'll see what I can do. Found this particular one by chance. We were looking for a Draper cememtery and I spotted some boxwoods in the woods, on top of a hill. Excuse the pun but boxwoods in the forest are a "dead giveaway" for a cemetery! | | | M. A. Claxton

Thank you for posting the correct information for Jennings Courts. Yes, we will have to go back and do a thorough (pitchfork) search of the cemetery and see if we can find the rest of that stone.
