Sarah Prater

I just saw your contribution to Find A Grave Website. I have beeen searching for my gggg grandmother, Sarah Prater born in Russell County, Va. I have may times thought that perhaps your Sarah and my Sarah were the same person. I remember years ago finding a Sarah Prater that married David Picklesimer but decided I was on the wrong trail, but find myself always looking at her again.

My Sarah Prater married in 1841 in Lawrence County, KY to Absolem Jordan, also of Russell County, VA. This was his second marriage and in 1850, Sarah is listed alone with some of their Jordan children and some from his previous marriage. She remarried in abt 1854 in Carter County to another widow, Amos Bays. They had 3 children Amos, Henry and Amanda J. Bayes. In 1858, Amos was killed when someone rolled a stone down a mountain to spook Amos' horse, but the stone hit him in the head and he died. In the 1860 Floyd County, KY census she is listed alone with her 3 children, the Jordan children went to live with others (not sure of the relationship) and I think I have found them.

But I cannot find Sarah in the 1870 or 1880 census. Perhaps she had re-married again. I always thought that she may have been married before she married Absolem Jordan because she seemed a little older to be getting married for the first time for the times.

In your research have you found anything on this Sarah Prater?
You mention the 1850 Floyd County Census and your Sarah being listed there. Is she listed as Sarah Picklesimer or Sarah Prater?

Do you know where she is buried? I read somewhere that a stone with the names Archibald Prater & Martha Fugate Prater was found near a the construction site of Magoffin Grade School and they assumed that their graves are under the basement. There was no date on the posted story. I wrote to the Magoffin Historical Society about this story but they have never replied.

I tried to email Ruby Sexton and it came back undeliverable.

If you have the name of other researchers that might connect with this Sarah Prater, please let me know,

Diane Bigelow
