James Gallagher (further)
Thanks. Old Cathredral Cemetey records confirm the owner of the gravesite at Section R Range 9 Lot #48 was James Gallagher and it contains 4 bodies:
Mary E. Gallagher died age 19 in 1871
Julia Gallagher died in ?1910
James Gallagher died age 80 in 1913
William Abrams died age 9.
My guess is that the obelisk was erected by James Gallagher for his daughter, Julia. When he died in 1913 no money or relatives remained--hence no epitaph. David Cross

MJB1312: The more I study your photograph, the more it appears NOT to be an epitaph for James Gallagher but rather for his 18 year old daugher JULIA. I think it says:
?In Memory of
Mary E.
daughter of
James & Julia
Gallagher
born ??? 1852
died ??? 1871
Did any of the other 3 shields on the obelisk appear to be his epitaph? Cemetery records indicate his is buried there with Mary & Julia.
Thanks

MJB1312---many thanks for the splendid photograph of the grave stone of James G. Gallagher in the Old Cathredral Cemetery in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the inscription is badly weathered. How did you interpret it? I see nothing to suggest his Civil War service in Co. A 4th Vermont Infantry. See: www.weldonrailroad.com if you are interested.

Thank you so much for trying. We know they are buried there but they may never have had a marker placed. Thanks again.
