I live in NC in Madison County with my husband of almost 54 years. We have three children and six grandchildren and two fuzzy children named Freddye and Smudge. I've been interested and actively pursuing genealogy for about fifteen years and have enjoyed the time spent very much. I think it's very important that our children and grandchildren know their heritage. | |

Hi Ann,
Tacoma McElroy was married to John McElroy, not Pender Jr. John and Pender were brothers. I obtained this info from a few different census reports and family trees on ancestry.com.
While fulfilling photo requests for Tacoma and Pender I found that Tacoma is buried next to John, which is why I checked ancestry.com to confirm her husband.

I received your correction for Lillie Cogburn. Your memorial; however, is in the incorrect cemetery. She is in New Cruso, not Gwyn. The two are right next to each other, separated only by a small gravel road and their respective signage. I walked and documented the entire New Cruso cemetery and can assure you she is there. Ann, you are welcome, and yes, I believe without a doubt from all the information I've found that Robert and Mary Ann are here parents. I can't find a Bob or William anywhere that married a Martha her age, or in Haywood County. Just wanted to add that Martha and LE were living in Spring Creek, Madison County NC in the 1880 census near Martha's "Aunt Margaret "Peggy" Russell Lusk. Margaret was the sister of Robert Russell Peggy married Joseph G Lusk in Haywood County in 1832. So this is another link to Robert and Mary Allen Russell. Ann, I'm sure she was the daughter of Robert and Mary Allen Russell. The 1850 census gives her as living with her widowed mother and siblings. The dc informant was mistaken, as often is the case, or Robert's middle name could have been William and he went by the nickname of Bill. Love your family picture! | | | Patricia Fairchild

Martha's mother was Mary "Polly Ann" Allen Russell.
Martha had a brother named William who was born in 1843. So I do believe that they did confuse her brother's name with her father, Robert Russell. Young Grover, being so young probably never met them,or know very little about Martha's side of the family, like most young people since he didn't know who Martha's mother was. Robert must have died before 1850 for he was not listed in the 1850 census where Mary and the family lived the Fines Creek section of Haywood County. | | | | [View all messages...] |
