Research for the J. J. Allen Family:
Webpage for Haynes/Conn

Still haven't found Elizabeth, J J or William in 1860. According to Elizabeth's obit, they moved to Louisiana in 1860. There is a community in Chicot County named Louisiana, so it is possible it is Arkansas, but the last child Fitz H. is listed as being born in Louisiana. However, they still have not been located on the 1860 census, so it is possible they were in transit.
08/25/2011 1866 Joseph J. Allen married Elizabeth Little in Hamilton County, TN - 19 Sep 1866
(familysearch.org - Tennessee Marriages, 1796-1950)
William H. Allen married Aggie Allen in Hamilton County, TN - 25 Apr 1867
(familysearch.org - Tennessee Marriages, 1796-1950)
This is probably the correct William, however since he is single in 1870, she probably died between 1867 and 1870.
Checked all ALLEN heads of household in the US, age 20-30, who were born in TN and found only ONE possible record:
Family #111 - Gain Landing, Railroad Township, Chicot County, AR:
Joe ALLEN, 28 yr. old male, b. in TN (1842)
Elizabeth ALLEN, 21 yr. old female, b. in TN (1849)
Will ALLEN, 2 yr. old male, b. in TN (1868)
5 households away is Wm. ALLEN, 22 yr. old male, laborer, b. in TN living with the John Thompson family.
Notes: The only problem with this Joe ALLEN family is the son being named Will instead of Neddie N. It would help if we could find a death certificate for Will/Neddie. I searched for ALLEN, ALLIN, ALIN, ALEN, KENNEDY, HAYNES, and CONN (only Robert and Abigail Conn were found).
Family #102 - Gains Landing, Rail Road Township, Chicot County, Arkansas:
G. AMBURN (AUBURN), 40, M, W, Black Smith, 400/100, TN
Elizabeth AMBURN, 45, F, W, TN
Mary L. AMBURN, 42, F, W, TN
Sarah A. AMBURN, 15, F, W, TN
Jas B. AMBURN, 10, M, W, TN
Fitz H. AMBURN, 4, M, W, LA
William B. F. ALLEN married Elizabeth Ann (Bettie) Warner 9 Mar 1874 in Sevier County, Arkansas
8/16/2011 1874 JJ Allen and Sarah J. Davis were married in Sherman, Grayson County, TX (4 Aug 1874) (source: familysearch.org)
8/20/2011 1876 Notes: JJ and Sarah Allen apparently moved to Montague County shortly after their marriage as his obituary states that "He [joined with] the Methodist Episca. . . 19 years ago at the . . . school house at Brushy, . . ,. were but few people in [the] county and people came for . . . and 9 miles to Brushy church, . . . self lived at the time, about 3 [miles] distant. During his 20 years Christian experiance." So, he either already lived there and Sarah influenced him to join the church or they moved there when they married.
9/6/2011 1880 JJ lived in Montague County, TX:
Josiah J. ALLIN, 36 yr. old male, farmer, b. in TN, m/f b. TN TN (1844)
Sarah A. ALLIN, 25 yr. old female, b. in UT, m/f b. IN IN (1855)
Neddie N. ALLIN, 12 yr. old male, b. in TN
Sarah Jane ALLIN, 4 yr. old female, b. in TX
Emma E. ALLIN, 2 yr. old female, b. in TX
Hunter GLANCE, 24 yr. old male, farmer, b. in SC
Notes: Neddie N. was born in TN. Need to find his death certificate and/or where he is in 1900.
Gabriel Amburn and Elizabeth still lived in Chicot County, AR:
Family #473 - Railroad Township, Chicot County, Arkansas:
G. AMBURN, 50, M, W, Blacksmith, 400/100, TN, SC, NC

Picture of Gabriel Amburn and family, probably after the death of Elizabeth.
8/16/2011 1880s JJ and Sarah lived in Sunset, Montague County, TX
The following article was found in The Arkansas Methodist: "Amburn -Sister E. J. Amburn suffered nineteen months from Paralysis and died July 19, 1889. Elizabeth J. Sallie and Frankie gave their mother a joyful greeting above. Sister Amburn was raised in the Presbyterian Church, joined the M. E. C. S., at Holly Grove 1873. Bro. Amburn is greatly bereaved, but he knows that he shall meet her, Sallie and Frankie where there is not more sorrowing. - Ben McGhee."

Notice that the subject of this bio is "the son of William and Mary (KILLINGSWORTH) ALLEN; he a farmer, born at Knoxville, Tenn., in 1799, and dying in Hillsboro, Ill., in 1862; she also a native of Knoxville, born in 1824, and still living; they were the parents of eleven children." I found one good family tree for the couple, but it doesn't mention Knoxville. However, the bio was written before 1895 and I tend to believe it before current research. Mary is younger than him, so he may have been married before her and if so could be the g-grandfather of J. J. Allen or a grand uncle?
An F. M. Allen is listed in the Texas Confederate Pensions - App# 02564 - Lee County. Recommend ordering a copy to see if it fits or not. (There is a Dr. Frank Allen buried in Falls County - 1832-1900).
There is a Joseph Allen - App #08678 - Falls County but probably not him.
8/16/2011 Elizabeth Allen - Birth: 1830 Death: 1898; Burial: Elmwood Cemetery, Bowie
Montague County, Texas - Plot: B (fits closer to the age from the 1850 census and maybe she got younger as she went along)
William J. Allen - Birth: Sep. 4, 1847 Death: Mar. 10, 1925, Briscoe County
Texas; Burial: Resthaven Cemetery, Quitaque, Briscoe County, Texas - Plot: B 4 S 1 L 5 (no death certificate found) - found Confederate pension application for him that states he was born in Washington County, Texas.
William J. Allen married Daizy L. Staggs, 27 May 1894 - Bowie, TX; it appears this couple is living in Tyler, Smith County, TX. He is age 31 and she is age 24.
F. M. Allen married M. M. Hopwood - 19 Jun 1870 - Lincoln County, TN
William J. Allen death certificate (18 Nov 1849-14 Jan 1937) - is on 1930 census with wife Mary K., married at ages 28 and 20, they are ages 81 and 68, both born in TN. Daughter living with them is Ida L. Harden, divorced, age 45, born in AR and a grandson, George H. Sinclair, age 21, born in Texas.

|John Blakemore Sellers||Edwards Family Cemetery/Grayson Co., KY|
I came across a record indicating Moses Edwards (Abt 1762-1847) was buried at the Edwards Family Cemetery and Mary (Tweedle) Edwards (1780-1864)died at Short Creek, Grayson County, KY, where the cemetery is located. Any possibility that they are there?
|Louise Taraba||RE: Shepherd inquiry|
Julie, thanks for your prompt reply to my question concerning the middle name of John Shepherd, Sr.
I am aware of the proper use of "Sr." and "Jr." and also know that quite often there is misuse of the suffixes. However, I have yet to find in any document that the father John or son John was ever given or used the middle name of James. I actually did not see anything in John Jr's memorial that explained my concern. John Sr. had around 10 or 11 children, and one being a James which little seemed to be known about. I suspect that somewhere along the line someone may have decided he was same as John Jr, or something. Hard to tell when the James began to appear as a middle name for John Jr. and as a result one has no idea when or why this got started in trees. Again, this may be one of the many times there is suffix misuse.
Thanks for hearing me out. Louise

Hi Julie...are you familiar with the EFA? If not, let me know and I can give you more information. They meet once a year in Virginia and have been doing so since the 1930's.
