I have been working on my family history for 30 years. Four years ago a friend of mine and I decided it would be fun to physically read the tombstones in the local cemeteries. Family Research on the Hays Family that I would love to share to you as well as those who are are family members is:
Our Hayes family starts with our patriarch Samuel Hayes who was born in Virginia on June 7 1803. He met a young women from Maryland named Elizabeth Hannah Swope (22 Jan 1815, Maryland - 07 Mar 1863, Noble County, Indiana) and were married in Maryland around 1830. They migrated westward and are believed found living in Bloomfield Township, Trumbull County, Ohio in the 1840 census as farmers. This family seems to never settle down, it was found in Williams County, Ohio and is later found living in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio in the 1850 census. They were in Seneca County for a short time before they migrated to Jefferson Township, Nobel County, Indiana and are found in the 1860 census. It is also where our matriarch died and she is buried in the Sweet Cemetery, which is located just outside of Albion, Indiana. Following the death of his beloved Elizabeth, Samuel moved his family to Bushnell Township, Montcalm County, Michigan where he lived the rest of his life, dying at home on August 29, 1881. This family was blessed with twelve children.
1.David R. Hayes was born on 04 Jul 1832 in Seneca, Ohio, USA. He married Almira Esther Swem (16 Jan 1840, Trumbill County, Ohio - 25 Oct 1931, Sherman City, Isabella, Michigan) she was the daughter of Asa S. Swem and Hester Elizabeth Myers, on 28 Sep 1859 in Noble, Indiana. He died on 23 Nov 1916 in Nottawa, Isabella, Michigan, USA.
2.William Hayes was born on DATE UNKNOWN 1834 in Liberty Township, Seneca, Ohio, USA. He married Lavina Phillips (DATE UNKNOWN 1843, Williams County, Ohio - DATE UNKNOWN after 1910) she was the daughter of UNKNOWN PARENTS, on 27 Apr 1856 in Williams County, Ohio, USA.
3.Lucy Catherine Hayes was born on 31 Mar 1836 in Seneca County, Ohio, USA. She married Eli Cramer (15 Nov 1841, Ohio - 09 Aug 1909, North Shade, Michigan) he was the son of John Cramer and Martha MNU, on 12 Dec 1862 in Noble County, Indiana, USA. She died on 06 Mar 1904 in Bloomer, Montcalm County, Michigan, USA.
4.Phebe Anabell Hayes was born on 04 Jul 1838 in Williams County, Ohio, USA. She married Solomon Zimmerman (14 Apr 1832, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland - 19 Oct 1911, Sidney, Montcalm County, Michigan) he was the son of Barnhart Zimmerman and Sarah Sager, on 01 Oct 1854 in Williams County, Ohio, USA (By George Bible JOP. Family Search, Batch #: M514001, Dates: 1824-1861, Source Call #: 0954803 V. 1-4). She died on 04 Oct 1913 in Sidney, Montcalm, Michigan, USA.
5.Martha Melissa Hayes was born on 12 Jun 1840 in Seneca County, Ohio, USA. She married William H. Russell (09 Dec 1830, Steuben County, New York - 28 Apr 1912, Bushnell, Montcalm, Michigan) he was the son of James Junie Russell and Mary Rebecca Barney, on 22 Mar 1857 in Superior, Williams, Ohio, USA. She died on 26 Jul 1923 in Montcalm, Michigan, USA.
6.Maribah Barbara 'Mab' Elizabeth Hayes was born on 22 Aug 1842 in Williams County, Ohio, USA. She married Sylvester S Arntz (22 Aug 1842, Canton, Stark, Ohio - 07 Apr 1926, Bushnell, Montcalm, Michigan) he was the son of John Philip Arntz and Elizabeth Rice, in 1865 in Evergreen, Montcalm, Michigan, USA. She died on 07 Jul 1925 in Montcalm, Michigan, USA.
7.George Hayes was born on DATE UNKNOWN 1844 in Seneca County, Ohio, USA. He is found in the 1850 census in Liberty, Seneca County, Ohio, and is found with this family in the 1860 census in Indiana. He died on DATE UNKNOWN, and PLACE UNKNOWN.
8.Rachael Hayes was born on DATE UNKNOWN 1845 in Seneca County, Ohio, USA. She is found in the 1850 census in Liberty, Seneca County, Ohio, is not found with this family in the 1860 census in Indiana. . She died on DATE UNKNOWN, and PLACE UNKNOWN.
9.Henry Hayes was born on DATE UNKNOWN 1848 in Liberty, Seneca County, Ohio, USA. He is found in the 1850 census in Liberty, Seneca County, Ohio, is not found with this family in the 1860 census in Indiana. He died on DATE UNKNOWN, and PLACE UNKNOWN.
10.Serena Elmira Hayes was born in Jul 1853 in Liberty, Seneca, Ohio, United States. She married Jacob R. Graham (22 Mar 1847, Chippewa, Wayne, Ohio - 06 May 1905, Muskegon, Michigan) son of William Graham and Ellen Stollar, on 08 May 1870 in Bushnell, Montcalm County, Michigan, USA. She died on 05 Sep 1932 in Ronald, Ionia, Michigan, USA.
11.Bruce Price Bryce Hayes was born on 03 Jul 1855 in Nobel County, Indiana, USA. He died on 30 Apr 1873 in Bushnell, Montcalm, Michigan, USA. According to the Michigan Genealogical Death Indexing System, Ledger Page: 237, Record Number: 50, Bruce Hayes died 30 April 1873 at Fish Creek, Montcalm County by drowning. He was single and worked as a farm hand.
12.Julia LaDora Hayes was born on 23 Oct 1859 in Jefferson, Noble, Indiana, United States. She married Ruben T Huyck (12 Oct 1851, Norwalk, Huron, Ohio - 21 Nov 1926, Carson City, Montcalm, Michigan) he was the son of Samuel T. Huyck and Rebecca Jane Burras, on 03 Mar 1875 in Bloomer, Montcalm, Michigan. She died on 27 Feb 1932 in Middleton, Gratiot, Michigan, United States.
