RE: Meriwether Kennon
Thanks Bill, if you go to Frances' memorial, review pics of Meriwether and Francis' marriage license and certificates, you can clearly see the Meriwether's middle initial is an 'L' vice 'Z'.

Frances survived Meriwether by 41 years, a long time for people to forget Meriwether's middle name.

Best regards,
Dave Kennon

Hi Bill,

Hope you are doing well. Do you have any idea how Chandler Aswell Roberts died and where he is buried?
Chandler was Henry's father. Suppose he died in Waco but could not find records their either.

Thank you,

RE: Meriwether Kennon
P.S. just found another record, Newton Co Probate, 3 July 1854, middle initial "L" looks like Leonard's first initial in cursive.

RE: Meriwether Kennon
Hello Bill, I assume we are cousins?

Meriwether is my 3rd great grandfather, I have conducted extensive research into the "Z" or "L" controversy, and have arrived at the conclusion that the assumption his middle name started with a "Z" is due to inaccurate interpretation of the middle initial based on how the cursive writing "L" in the day looked like a "Z" vice "L". I have visited the Covington County GA Courthouse where copies of the court records are available to review. The marriage license and certificate for he and Francis is there, as well as the probate records of his estate due to his sudden early death without a will. Copies of these are viewable on my ancestry.com profile. Also, Meriwether's father William lists his name as Meriwether L Kennon, not Meriwether Z Kennon. I have yet to find any solid evidence the L stands for Lewis, but highly suspect that it is indeed Lewis as he was born shortly after the infamous Lewis and Clark expedition, and was born in Tennessee.

The 1840 census for Newton CO shows M L Kennon as head, the 1850 census does not show a middle initial, but lists Frances all of their children at that time. The 1836 marriage license (certificate on the reverse side) clearly shows an "L" vice a "Z" (compare to the clerk's first name LAMBERTH). The court records of Meriwether's estate clearly shows the same cursive L vice Z (those are not on ancestry).

Consider that Meriwether died at the age of 44, and Francis 41 years later. Imagine family around at the time, who probably weren't even born when Meriwether passed, attempting to figure out Meriwether's initials for Francis' headstone. On seeing the cursive "L" it's easy to assume that they thought it was a Z, and therefore "M Z Kennon" was inscribed and more or less set in stone the belief that his middle name started with a Z.

How "Zeniford" was derived from that is beyond me to understand, because that name does not exist in any genealogical records I have seen.

My conclusion, is that illiterate people misinterpreted Meriwether's middle name, and without any other written documents to verify otherwise, went with the Z. I sincerely hope that this evidence will help clear up the misunderstandings in our families regarding Meriwether's middle initial, and if I do find something to prove it was Lewis, I will publish it ASAP.

Sincerely, Dave Kennon
