|MO genealogist||George Pettigrew, Leavenworth National Cemetery|
Thank you for posting the picture of George Pettigrew's headstone.
While researching Pettigrew family lines in western Pennsylvania, I came across George in the 1850 census in Butler Co. PA. I discovered that he had been in Co. K, 103rd Regiment, PA Volunteer Infantry, in the Civil War, and had been captured at the surrender of Union forces at the Battle of Plymouth, NC, in April, 1864. With his comrades, he was imprisoned at Andersonville Confederate prison in Georgia. Many of his comrades did not survive.
He is listed as:
- POW on Apr 20 1864 at Plymouth, NC
- Paroled on Apr 7 1865
Sources for the above information:
- History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865, (1870)
- A History of the 103rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, (1910)
George enlisted 28 Oct. 1861, at Kittanning, Armstrong Co. PA. He re-enlisted 1 Jan 1864 at Plymouth NC, and was discharged 15 June 1965 at Harrisburg PA. He was in U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at various locations, off and on, from 1889 until his death in 1903.
His records from the Vet Homes indicate he was single. I never discovered who his parents were. In the 1850 census he is enumerated with an elderly couple, Henry and Polly Fogle, in Venango Twp, Butler Co. PA. William Fogle, of Fulton Co. OH, is given as his nearest relative on his Vet Homes records.

The Gemmell Family was killed in Maryland when the plan crashed into their house.
We have created memorials for the mother & two children.
The mother was found shielding the two children from the fire & smoke.
Please help us pass the word to have other Find A Grave member show their support & stop by the memorials.
