databases for research in Germany
choose a place and click at the left on Gesamtliste der Familiennamen
enter first name (Vorname) - last name(Nachname)
click suchen

Find the area in Germany where your german last name is most common
type the name in the searchbar and click on suchen.

Scroll down to the pic that says Standesbücher-click on that - click again - type the name of the place in the searchbox - choose the book, click on Archivalieneinheit einsehen - browse through the pages

Hi - yes different censuses say different things...

Good to know where Frankfort-am-Main is though. Because one of her censuses said that and one said Darmstadt-Hesse.

They do not teach these things in our schools.

But there are a lot of Obert obituaries and such which say 'from Baden' but maybe they didn't officially leave, I don't know the history of the time very well.
