Alice you should be proud! William was in the 23rd Pennsylvania, Birneys Zouaves! I am the webmaster and Master Historian for the Regiment in which your decendant, William James fought with. Our Website is http://www.23rdpa.com . I think you'll agree it is a very passionate website which we (the 23rd PA Memorial Association) honor the men of the Regiment. In fact, just a few years ago we replaced the Headstone of Joshua Garsed in Leverington Cemetery.
Anyway I got your photo of William and made a memorial to him on our website. I put a small bio of his service on there. to view it, go to the website, click enter, go over to the right side and click original photos and then click page 28, scroll down and you will see the Writeup. If you have more info or photos you could share so we can keep his memory alive online, that would be great. I would like to get him a new headstone and could use your help. Can you take a photo of his existing grave with some reference points like the stone next to it, so I can pinpoint the grave. I live in Gettysburg but plan to be at Leverington this Saturday.
