My husband and I located to Helena MT in 2004, after he'd been in the Marines for 10 years. I have been involved in genealogy for many years (a bug that I picked up from my mother:-), and since moving to Helena, I have become very interested in researching the history of this wonderful area! I am just beginning my quest, mainly focusing on cemetery transcription and research into the history of old buildings. I am more than happy to assist anyone who would like photos taken at any of the Lewis & Clark and surrounding county cemeteries, and/or transcriptions. Looking forward to the never ending road of research!!!

James E. Sites
Hi Dianne -

Would you consider transferring James E. Sites (#39508746) to my management? Your entry is, indeed, correct. He was buried here at Forestvale as a Montana Pioneer but the family place a marker for him in the family plot in IOOF. James is the great grandfather of my husband and the GGGrandfather to our three children. I'd love to manage both of his gravesites and help keep the stories straight. We are in Helena for the next week and working on maintaining our family gravesites and remembering our relatives. I would be most grateful.

Thank you.

George Boothby
I just loaded a photo for George Boothby. His stone says Brothby. Not sure which last name is correct. I'm hoping you can figure this one out - thanks!

Frank J. Bowen
Hi Dianne, I wonder if you can figure this out? My uncle Frank J. Bowen is listed twice on the findagrave web site. You have him #39507898 at Lewis and Clark cemetery with a death date of 18 Jul 1974. There is a second burial given for him #60076357 at Custer National cemetery in Big Horn County that was entered by letsgogirls with a photo showing 18 Aug 1974 as his death date. The Montana Death Index shows his death date as 18 July 1974, yet his stone shows 18 Aug 1974. The Social Security Death Index shows 31 Dec 1874-18 Aug 1974 and the US Veteran's grave sites shows 31 Dec 1894 to 18 Aug 1974. I wonder if there are two Frank Bowen's with the same birth/death year or another explanation. Do you know if he has a gravestone at Lewis and Clark? If so, could you add the photo to his memorial? Thanks, Mike

RE: Edward A. Sloan, died 1904
I keep the records for the Lewis and Clark County Cemetery and Edward Sloan is not buried in that cemetery, in fact, he isn't buried in Montana. Here is the information:

Edward A. Sloan, age 32, hotel clerk, died in Townsend, Montana of erysipelas, Dr. Treacy was the attending physician, shipped to Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington.

Herrmann & Co. Funeral Home records: Mr. J. Marks of Townsend Mercantile Co. ordered the following for E. A. Sloan deceased on January 22, 1904: One cloth casket with zinc lined outside box and sealed $75.00, gentleman's robe $5.00, embalming $100.00, total charge $180.00. Shipped to Chehalis, Lewis County , Washington.

As you can see, the county records are in error. I had it wrong in my records also but have made the correction.

I don't have time to research more in Washington but if you find anything, I would love to know.
