I have long, long connections with Wilkes County, NC. I grew up in upper Virginia, the D.C. area to be exact, and would visit here from time to time with my dad, who was born in Wilkes County. In 1967, we moved to CA and I married in 1970 and moved to Oregon where I lived until 2000. At that time, I moved back to CA to help with my parents. Each year, we would visit during late September/early October for family reunions and about two years ago, daddy and mother were getting tired of things in CA in the Bay Area and started thinking about moving. We looked at property in Wilkes County and last September found the home we now live in. We moved from CA to "home" and the moving van pulled up on Dec. 26 of 2007 and in we moved! We are glad to be home among family and friends and while I have never lived here before, it feels like home since my roots go back to the 1770's here and I feel like I know all there is to know about Wilkes (which, I'm sure, is not true!) But, here I am and since I am caregiver for my 90-year old dad and 85-year old mother, (who has since passed away on June 11 2009), I don't work and have some free time on my hands. I am going to attempt to photograph Wilkes County cemeteries over time and since findagrave was so helpful to me, I am happy to be able to add to the lists. I am willing to help with questions and answers about Wilkes cemeteries and history, but cannot guarantee I will do it in "your time". lol I love this website and appreciate all the great contributors.

James Newton Vannoy
Hello Mr. Fairchild

I have an addition to James Vannoy's Children Clyde Smith Vannoy memorial # 95839070. This is my husband's grandfather. If you could add him to the list we would appreciate it.

Thank you!

RE: Judith Barber
Hello Mr. Fairchild. This is Charlene Jones, and yes I am a direct descendant of Judith Barber. Here is the line: Judith Barber, Lucy Barber, Annie Jones, Marion J Dula, Anne G Dula Howard, and I am Charlene Howard Jones. I am the eldest daughter of Anne and Ernest Howard. You may have seen my additions to lines in Find A Grave. I grew watching living history with Grandmother Marion. She was born in 1897 and had pictures of everyone in her home and a large Bible that she used to record births, deaths, marriages, etc. Mom Marion received her teaching certificate from Bennett College in 1920 so she was a recorder of our history. Yes, Mammy Judy was exceptional! I would be honored to assume responsibility of Judith Barber's page. Please send any guidance or instructions to me at your convenience. If you have read the Record of Wilkes series, I think you will agree that humanity and leaving an honorable legacy matters to all of us. You have shown that characteristic and know that it doesn't have an ethnicity. I shake your hand over the internet and say thank you. -Charlene H. Jones

Rufus Carmel Lowe #72554118
There is a second grave marker photo added to Rufus Carmel Lowe's memorial but the name on it is Rufus Carroll Lowe.
The dates on the marker are 20 April 1924 to 11 June 1963.
The dates for Rufus Carmel are 1882 to 1948.

Obviously, the footstone is not meant for Rufus Carmel Lowe. I don't see anywhere on the memorial who it belongs to and wonder if it was placed on the wrong memorial. I'm guessing it could be a child of Rufus Carmel Lowe.

Would there need to be a change on this memorial. I really appreciate all you have done for the Dowell family and its offshoots.

RE: Cove Creek
Yes again, thank you for being such a help. The last I have found of this cemetery is a project done in the 1930s. I expect it is somewhere in the Mulberry Community as it was listed as being about five miles from North Wilkesboro traveling on Hwy. 18 N. The N. Wilkesboro town city limit at the time would have placed about five miles in Mulberry by my calculations and relatives I believe were buried there who also lived around and in Mulberry. I think it got confused with Cane Creek and I have seen a few potential errors, but Cove Creek and Cane Creek were two different areas. I am not in the area to look at maps and can find little online in the way of maps for that time. The family that remains there is uncertain of the whereabouts of Cove Creek, but have had some speculation that it is located in one of two places: being a private cemetery off Ruitan Park Rd., aka in past as Windy Ridge in Mulberry, now there is a Windy Ridge Rd. which is not the same road,(off Ruitan Park Rd. makes the most sense in mileage to me), or a private cemetery somewhere around Shumate Mountain which is closer to the northern Wilkes line than five miles outside the town of N. Wilkesboro. You are a great contributor to this site and your knowledge is very, very helpful. Blessings to you.

Brown Family
Thanks you so much for the photos from Center Baptist in Wilkes County. I visited there in 2000 to see my grandfathers grave (Harden Brown), but with your photo's I have now been able to see the family around him. I have also noticed that a lot of the cemeteries within NC are family cemeteries and will be visiting Olde Garden Cemetery in the Miller's Creek area where my uncle and aunt are buried. As I, it seems like a lot of my family lived in the Washington DC area.
Thanks
