I live in Maui, Hawaii. I was born and raised in California. I have a large Mississippi connection. The photo is of Wesley Dow Allen son of Major John Braxton Allen and Elizabeth Herod. Wesley's wife is Melisa Jane White, she is the daughter of James White and Mary Polly (White) White. Seated is Ida Eugenia Allen "Miss Ida" "Big Mother". She is my great grandmother. I remember her. She died when I was 5 years old I moved to Maui with my wife Yoki and 4 boys Eric, Jason, Lucas and Yancey in 1975. We had a daughter Marissa born here on Maui. I surfed at Honalua Bay and windsurfed at Hookipa Beach on Maui for 25 years. About St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. I have no relatives buried there. My wife goes to the thrift store there and I transcribe burials while I wait for her. If you have information about people buried there please let me know what you would like to add.

 | RE: Coffin family John,
How nice of you to send a note. It is true, I am working on a book and believe I can commit it to the press sometime in the fall. I'll certainly let you know would you be interested in obtaining one.
I am wondering if you use Ancestry.com and if so if you'd like to share some information. I have an extensive repository of Coffin data and genealogical connections et al and I'd like to see how your records can be integrated.
Perhaps you'll send me a note if you'd like to get started?

 | RE: St Josephs Cemetewry, Maui Kewl. I grew up in Riverside California where there is a Statue of him. The lore is the City Fathers had just enough money for either a staue or a public swimming pool. They went for the Statue. I wont describe some of the pranks we pulled on that statue to make up for the lack of a pool. | | | Tom DeCosta
 | RE: St Josephs Cemetewry, Maui Thank you for the transfer. daCosta Vasconcelos was the orginal name, it evolved over the years to De Costa then DeCosta. Some say the 'da' was a commoner name, 'du' was from the knighted class, 'de' was royalty, 'do' was associated with church hierarchy. Costa is definitely a commoners place name. However Vasconcelos is a name with roots in the middle ages. Margarida also descended from surname Camelo bloodline which can be traced back to the 800's and the founding of Portugal near Guiamares.
I tend to think that as children went to school and had to learn to write their names, they shortened their names, hence dropping the Vasconcelos in this case. The De/da/do/du changes were just a way to differentiate people back when there no cars which limited mobility so people tended to live their lives within walking distances of their homes thus after 1 or 2 generations there were so many kids with the same surname, nicknames and spelling variations were used to reduce confusion by the school teachers. | | | Tom DeCosta
 | RE: St Josephs Cemetewry, Maui John -
I am the guy holding the one of the 4 girls.
Would much appreciate transfer of the daCosta/DeCosta records to me. I see a few minor errors to correct. | | | skydancr
 | RE: Saint Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Maui I do that in Ohio: sometimes have records that tell the location, other times do not. In small cemeteries, it is not so bad. Do not attempt to find tombstones "blind" in larger cemeteries.Added by skydancr on May 15, 2013 1:48 PM | | | skydancr
 | RE: Saint Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Maui I'm a volunteer from Ohio. Can hardly pass a cemetery without stopping and taking pictures :) Fortunately, I have a patient husband. Just stopped, walked around and snapped at random. You have done a great job to enter all of those names.Added by skydancr on May 14, 2013 10:49 PM | | | rick myers
