I am 32 years old and I have been researching my family for 12 years now. |
I mainly do genealogical research in the Jasper Co. In. and Magoffin & Floyd counties in Kentucky.
Any cemetery information I add is extremely accurate as far as those buried there and the location.
Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have.

I looked through the Kenton Democrat newspaper on microfilm for the obits for Doney Nichols (08-31-1928) and Okie Nichols (12-05-1928.) I couldn't find them.
I then called the Hardin County Health Department uptown, to make sure that they did die in Hardin County. Jackie said their death certificates were on file.
So I got the Kenton Republican newspaper on microfilm, thinking it may be in there, and I just didn't find either one.
Still have not got anything back from Preston Cemetery. I would say they are buried there. Will let you know when I get further info.

I know there was a fire of records in 1940. But I know the man that has the plot map, been out there a few times with him. Let me email him and see what he says. There is a location in Preston where babies are buried at the lower end and then there is whole section with unmarked that were the poor. But with the info provided I will see what he says. I will be going into Kenton this week and will stop in and see if I can get an obit on them. I think I have already took pictures of that lower end. But the children could be in a portion that has not been entirely photographed yet and that would be the 2nd west section and the 1st section upper end. I will let you know his response.
Geneva's (Sparks) Sheller the daughter of Jessie Sparks. I got in contact with family and I have her sister's number Jeannie and Lisa (Hollon) Allen number. I know Geneva has a half brother still living, his dad was a Hollon in Alger, Ohio and she has a sister still living in Kenton, Ohio. I will call my husband's cousin this morning and see if I can get some info on her, ohone number, email etc. Noah Hollon, is elderly and the last time I talked to him his mind was not real clear. There are Poes in my husband Shepherd line. He is related to the Poes buried in the Preston Cemetery, Susie Poe's grandma was a Shepherd. I will let you know what I find out.

My husband is related to Geneva (Sparks) Sheller, daughter of Jessie Sparks and Nelis (Rowe) Hollon. Nelis is my husband's aunt and Geneva is my husband's 1st cousin. No relation to Jessie Sparks. Hope this helps.
Was born in 1810 in Unknown. He died in 1861 in Mud Creek, Floyd Co., Kentucky. He was buried in 1861 in Tinker Fork, Mitchel Branch, Floyd Co., Kentucky.
Solomon's birthplace is unknown. He was a lay Preacher and a Constable in Floyd Co., Kentucky in 1861 when he was killed by Miles Sturgill with a pick axe in May of that year. He is buried in the HAMILTON CEMETERY at Mitchell Branch of Tinker Fork of Mud Creek in Floyd Co., Kentucky.
I spent a day with a Hamilton descendant at his home in 1989. He told me that Solomon was the first to be entered into the Hamilton Cemetery and he showed me the grave. The head stone says " S. BALDWIN DEC 1861 " and is merely a rough cut rock. I traveled to the Kentucky State archives in Frankfort to review the trial transcript but could find only the record of arrangement of Sturgill.
bullet Eli Sturgill
bullet Jesse Hall
bullet Elijah Hall
Who were obviously there to support Miles Sturgill and post bail of $4000.00. Also in the courtroom were:
bullet Davenport Newsome
bullet John W. Baldwin
bullet Alexander Baldwin
bullet Christina Baldwin, Wife of Alexander Baldwin.
The Baldwin men were Solomon's sons. Each posted $100.00 bond as material witnesses. This activity occurred during the June court term on the 3rd of June and was to continue in the next term. However, the following term records were missing. It appears that these records were lost during the confederate occupation of Frankfort (the only northern capitol captured during the war) but the records continued exactly four years later. The court books ended with "book L" and continued with book M, but four years had passed. I do not know if the trial was held or what transpired. The next move would be to locate a newspaper of the time or find a prison record of Miles Sturgill if in fact he was convicted. Others present at the initial hearing and also posted bond were:
bullet Blackburn Sturgill
bullet Thomas Tackett
bullet Harvy Tackett.
All of these people lived near the Baldwins and many of their descendants are still in the area.
In 1866 Solomon's wife, Sarah, distributed a great deal of land to her children. I suppose that she did this to prepare for her second marriage. She married Solomon Hubbard on 9 July 1866. Shortly there-after they moved to Lawrence County Ohio where many of her children moved to start a new life.
Born 1837 in Virginia. He married Amanda Hall on 25 Mar 1852 in Floyd Co. Ky. She was born 1838.
