Lee Patrick

Actress. Born in New York City , her father was an editor of a theatre trade paper who actively promoted her interest in theater. At age 13 she debuted on Broadway in ‘The Green Beetle' (1924), her stage becoming throughout the 1920s and 1930s included ‘Baby Mine' (1927), ‘Little Women' (1931), ‘ June Moon' (1933), ‘Knock on Wood' (1935), and ‘Stage Door.' Favorable reviews led to an RKO contract where she was supposed to reprise her role in ‘Stage Door' for the film version. Her film career was crippled, however, by the animosity of gossip columnist Luella Parsons who was criticized, in print, by Patrick's husband. Despite difficulties, by 1940, she had established herself as an invaluable character actress at Warner Brothers, appearing in such films as ‘Saturday's Children (1940), ‘Now Voyager' (1942), ‘Mildred Pierce' (1945). And probably one of her best known roles, Effie, Sam Spade's secretary in the classic ‘The Maltese Falcon' (1941). The versatile actress showed yet another face as Henrietta Topper, in the early sitcom ‘Topper' which ran from 1953 to 1955. Much, though not all, of the second half of her career was comprised of lighter fare than the first half, including ‘Auntie Mame' (1958), ‘Pillow Talk' (1959), and ‘7 Faces of Doctor Lao' (1964). She retired from film work to travel and paint, but was coaxed back one more time to reprise the role of Effie in the ‘Maltese Falcon' spoof ‘The Black Bird' in 1975. She succumbed to a heart seizure the day before her 81st birthday. She and Tom Wood, her husband of 45 years, had just returned to their Laguna Hills from New York City where they had celebrated her birthday. (bio by: Iola)

While I appreciate your vote of confidence, it appears that Miss Ontiveros has a memorial all ready: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=94258133
