RE: VanSlyke
Lorraine,

Okay, let's look at some of the other censuses.

In the 1855 state census he is in Wheatfield, New York. His age is given as 41. He is with his wife Emily. The children are listed as Cathrm, Delava and Emily. I think the census taker pretty much got the names wrong. The ages would match Chauncy, Delevan and Emilie.

In the 1875 census he was in Pilot Grove, Minnesota, age 63. He was with Irena, Monroe, Delavan and Jesse. They listed his wife as Patterson Van Slyke, born in Scotland. It looks like they really mixed her up with her father. At first I thought her father might be there with them.

In the 1885 census he was in Elmore, age 61. He was with Emily, John, Delanen (sic) and Jess.

See what I mean about his birth year being elusive?

RE: VanSlyke
Lorraine,

Maybe I was looking at the wrong family tree. I thought I saw a picture of a Van Slyke family Bible.

I will post the obituary on findagrave if I can. I have injured one finger and can't type very well.

RE: VanSlyke
Lorraine,

I don't have an account on Ancestry, but sometimes a friend lets me use hers. I looked at your family tree. I do have a question. I once communicated with a person from the family with the Van Slyke Family Bible from which you posted a photo. She told me that she was pretty sure the John Van Slyke in that family had no wife or children. I don't remember exactly what she said, and I guess she wasn't positive. So I guess the question is, do you have anything to establish that the one in their Bible is "our" John Van Slyke other that the birth year on the headstone? John's obituary says he died January 16, 1891 aged 70 years. This would make his birth year about 1820 or 1821. I think in the censuses his given ages could put the birth year anywhere from 1812 to 1824. Maybe he was like my grandfather, who didn't have a birth certificate and just made up a year when someone asked. Eventually they made him come up with a year, and it was found in a family Bible. So if, in fact, this is "our" John, the Bible may establish the correct birth year as well. But we need something else to establish that he is indeed the right John. It would be helpful if the Van Slykes didn't have so many Johns.

I saw that you posted something about the Van Slyke family from Susan Bauer. I think that was her name. Did you see her other post where she speculated on John's parentage? Have you communicated with her?

RE: VanSlyke
John and Emily were also my second great grandparents. From which of their children are you descended? I am descended from Irene.

I'm still learning how to do this. I just found out that I had messages. So how would I share or move them?

And have you been able to trace back to John and Emily's parents?

RE: Holt family
Hello. I'm glad you like the picture and info, but which Holt are we talking about? I'm missing something I think. Pat

RE: Hi Jeanne,
Stanley and Muriel were my aunt and uncle. My grandfather was Gaylord Bollenbach, the brother of Stanley. I was raised by my grandparents, so are families were close.

I appreciate your transferring ownership to me.

RE: Elizabeth Savory Eddy
Thank you for the excerpts about Elizabeth Eddy. I see what you mean now.

Those were very strict times apparently. I had another ancestor who was brought before the court for merely having two guests in his own home that the city council (whatever they called it then) did not pre approve.

Thank you so much for leaving the comment. I would be very interested to know any information you had on the Savory and Eddy line. I have a tree at ancestry.com you could come see if you wanted to look at what I have so far.
