Rebecca Maude Duncan
Good Morning, Jean,

I just took the liberty of posting Rebecca's photo on your memorial for her. I hope that is OK. When I took the photo out from behind the glass so I could scan it I found a neat hand written message in old ink that gave the info I have also put under the photo. The photo belonged to my great, great grandfather, Wm McGill Duncan and Rebecca was his cousin. It was a thrill to find it! I have finished copying Grandpa Duncan's Civil War story from his notes and would be happy to send it if I could find your email. as always, Ruth

RE: Diamond
Oh boy, I am so sorry Jean I don't have the paper I wrote the info on and what I found, it should all be on the memorials I hope. I work in high volumes so I don't have an email sent to myself of what I sent I already have so many from the edits I submit for memorials I am posting photos to. I basically went back and wetted my soft work glove and wiped water on the plate which made the letters somewhat stand out (see photos on memorials). The part that was unreadable is gone nothing remains to bring up, so sorry about that. People have been walking on it. I tried doing a rubbing gently with paper and pencil but it didn't work possibly due to the high humidity, it is so high my map that I carry is now all crinkly like it was sprayed with water.

There is a line with dates right under the middle break but no name. I thought there were possibly dates after the word "Born" but it was "Born in Ireland", no dates.

I hope that helps in some small way such a shame when they put the stones on the pathways but I guess better than throwing them away or crushing them for other purposes.

You could always send for all the Diamond death certificates (not sure what info they have) there is the gov't site

You can order them from or write asking what info is on the death record possibly shedding light on the mystery people. I had to do this for my family in VA.
Take care

Van Valin
Jean I think that is Viola Adelina Diamond below Arelia birth date is a bit off from what the records show but that is not unusual.

Hi Jean,
Went back sweeping did nothing the stone is actually worn away but I did wet my work glove and gently wiped the panel and it helped so you may wish to check out the memorials again. I also found a couple of obits and posted them.

I posted photos to the Melson memorial 131223745 and Van Valin of the tomb and close up of the door. Arelia is the daughter of Mark and Amelia Diamond.
Her family:
Mark A. Diamond, b. 1850, d. 22 Dec 1898 NOLA
Amelia McCormick b. 1860, d. 7 Aug 1901 NOLA
Charles W. E. Diamond b. 2 Dec 1882 NOLA
Thomas King Rex Diamond b. 22 Feb 1886 NOLA
Viola Adelina Diamond b. 14 Nov 1888 NOLA

RE: Mary Diamond, New Orleans
Hi Jean,
I was in Lafayette to fill a couple of request and I am trying to do the entire cemetery. No payment required I live a twenty minute walk away so it doesn't cost me anything. I am having problems dealing with the extreme heat I am not a native so I try to go early. I didn't have my brush with me to clean off the stone to get the sand out of the lettering last week I'll have it today. I am gentle working with the tombs but people have been walking on this panel so parts could be worn down. I'll also use records so you can get a full picture of the family.
Okay I better go now it is already 79 and with humidity feels like 82 degrees with possible pop up showers.

Mary Diamond, New Orleans
You are so nice! And so appreciated! That would be wonderful if you could take another look. If you are unable to get a better photo, would you be able to transcribe what is written below each of the names? I hate to ask you to carry along pen and paper, but that would really be a great help. I would be happy to pay you for this service as I know it will be a real chore. Just tell me how much.
What I know of the family is Charles and Mary, their sons: Thomas C., b.1823, John A., b.1832, Robert E. b.1837/d.1881, Wm. Henry,b.1839/d.1862, daughter Amelia,b.1842. I don't know about the Sarah Diamond who died in 1822, but Mary's mother was Sarah, so perhaps that was her first child.
At the bottom of the stone, William Onyett, aged 75, born Cambridge, England,is Mary's father.
Do you have any idea about the meaning of the Melson and VanValin plaque? And which one's b/d dates are on it? Do you think they had the new vault built? If so, they must have been granddaughters of Charles and Mary.
I'm sorry for all these questions - feel free to tell me NO if you want to.
Thank you ever so much, Jean

RE: Mary Diamond, New Orleans
Iam planning to go again next week and try to get a better photo the sun doesn't hit that plate till after 10:00 am and it has been very hot. I have to walk 20 min from my home so i go at 7:00 am and barely can take staying till 10:00. The weather man said it will be cooler next week, we have rain tomorrow. If anything maybe a rubbing might help. Let me see what I can do next week.
Have a great day

RE: Duncans
Good Morning, I am glad you are enjoying learning more about the family. I find it fascinating, too. I will let you know when I finish copying Grandpa Duncan's story of his experiences in the Civil War and put it on

Please let me know if you find out new things, too! I did send a message to ilpaulus asking about the other people in the photo, but he must not know, because he never answered. Sincerely, Ruth

RE: the Duncans
Hi, I will see if ilpaulus has the answer to that question. Right now we are extremely busy, but I am planning on getting back to the family tree just as soon as I can.

I also wish very much to see a picture of Margaret Murray Duncan. My grandmother gave me her earrings and says so many nice things in her Notes about Margaret that I would love to see her face.

I am fascinated by all this family stuff and enjoy very much meeting others who are, too. I will keep adding whatever I find and you are welcome to visit our tree anytime.
