RE: Zora Neale Hurston
Hi, Derrick.
I must have really confused you, because I think you missed out on the fact that I DIDN'T find her! LOL. (You said: "But I am so glad you found her!") I was never able to find the grave, and to this day I still don't even know if I was in the correct cemetery!
Good luck with your novels course!
P.S. Have you seen "Jump at the Sun?"

RE: Zora Neale Hurston
Hi, Derrick.

Yes, I was in Ft. Pierce. (I'm the one who wrote Zora's bio on her FindAGrave "famous" page, so I'm aware of her history). But all I can figure is that I was in the wrong cemetery. I must have spent an hour or an hour and a half walking through it over and over and over. I never saw any kind of sign like the one shown in the photos. I assumed it had been removed. But a friend of mine who lives in Ft. Pierce drove me past the cemetery (and I went back later by myself) and he told me it was the right one. It was an African American cemetery, on the next block behind the larger cemetery which faces Highway 1. The whole episode is very confusing and I still don't know what to make of it. I've never not been able to find a cemetery/grave before.

I just went to the FindAGrave page for Garden of Heavenly Rest cemetery, and even the directions posted there don't make any sense. It says to go to the dead end of 17th Street and the cemetery is right there. But if you zoom in on the map, it clearly shows that the cemetery is nowhere near 17th Street! And 17th Street doesn't even dead-end into anything (on either end!) Now, 7th Street dead-ends into Ft. Pierce Cemetery, which is the one in front of Garden of Heavenly Rest, but that doesn't make sense, either. Everything about it is a confusing mess!

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Zora Neale Hurston
Hi, Derrick.
Wonderful photo of Zora's grave! I had tried in vain to find the grave last August when I was in the area, and in fact walked the cemetery several times with no luck. :-( I wish I'd had your photo at that time, which would likely have helped me to find it. Hopefully I'll have better luck the next time I'm in the area.
