Bio and Links
Bio Photo I'm 2nd Lt. Staff Adjutant for Porter's Battery, a civil war artillery reenactment unit. We do battle reenactments, living history events, parades, school educational programs, and assist in paranormal investigations.

On Saturday September 19, 2009 at 9pm we, Porter's Battery, stormed Octagon Hall assisting Clarksville Ghost Hunter's in their paranormal investigation. We stormed the old home in order to rost the spirits out of hiding. IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Cecil Graham Lewis
Dear Sir,

I had a relative who was a platoon leader in Able Company, 24th Marines, during World War Two - the same company as your uncle, Cecil Graham Lewis. I have been researching the unit for two years, and thought I'd share some information I found about your ancestor.

He was one of the original members of Able Company, and was with the company at its formal dedication in August of 1943. He was the assistant leader of his rifle squad, and when the leader (Corporal William Quinn) was wounded during the combat landing on Namur, PFC Lewis assumed command. Quinn was hit while in the boat offshore, so PFC Lewis led the squad from the moment they touched the beach in their first combat action.

PFC Lewis was shot February 2, 1944, on the second day of the battle. An eyewitness stated: "I also lost my new squad leader corporal, Cecil Lewis, who was taken out by a sniper. I lost two squad leaders in one morning." On the muster rolls for the Battalion, PFC Lewis is listed as having died of "breast bullet wounds." On February 4, he was buried in Grave 69, Plot 2, Row 3, Pauline Point Cemetery, Kwajalein. I can't speculate as to the rumor that he remains overseas, but if you are curious I would urge you to contact the Marine Corps Historical Archives in Quantico, VA - they have records of every casualty and the final disposition of remains (and they are wonderfully enthusiastic and helpful to boot).

If you are interested, one of his squad mates, Alva Perry, maintains a website here: http://mysite.verizon.net/res71z3x/index.html

and my personal research website may be found here: http://ablecompany24.blogspot.com

If you have any other information (anecdotes, pictures, etc) of PFC Lewis, I would love to hear/see them and add them to my site. I hope to eventually be able to construct a comprehensive history of the company so we may never forget the sacrifices made by men like Cecil Graham Lewis.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey Roecker

William Watkins
Yes, my great great great grandfather was William Watkins. He, indeed, is buried in a cemetery overlooking the Mississippi River in Neeleyslanding, Cape Girardeau County, Mo. He was married to Louisa Ervin. Their daughter, Eliza Emma Watkins married Benjamin H. O'Guin. Their son was John William O'Guin - my great grandfather. His daughter, Irene O'Guin, was my grandmother. I noticed that you spelled the name Wadkins and Watkins, which one is correct?
A lot of the O'Guin family lived near Commerce, Mo. I was born in St. Louis, Mo. and lived there until I was about 30 years old, then, I moved to Oklahoma. Can you answer a question?
Were the Watkins Native American? I have heard that they were, but I didn't know for sure.
Have you heard of any of the persons above?
William Watkins had a son named John. I do not have any further info on him.
Please feel free to contact me per my e-mail address if you wish.
Thanks for replying.
Barbara
