Professor Crouch did not author "Kathleen Mavourneen" during the Civil War. He authored it in 1838 in England. By the time the Civil War started, it was already world famous and would then be cherished by the North as well as the South.
In the movie "Gettysburg," when the song is sung by an out of sight tenor, General Armistead remenisces that at the start of the war he and other Army officers gathered with their wives in California and that song was played. | |
