Bio and Links
Bio Photo If you know of any one memorialized here who served aboard the USS Melvin DD-680 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II, please let me know.

I'm a transplanted New Englander. My parents are Paul Oscar Avery(1921-2003) and Betty Wheaton Avery(1925-1992). My mom's and aunt's interest in family history was passed to me. I have been doing family history research for over 25 years, most of which has been in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine.

I am retired, and live in The Villages, Florida, and would be happy to find and photograph cemetery stones of your friends or family in the Sumter - Lake - Marion County area.

If you find some pictures or monuments I haven't included, I'd love to hear from you when you post them. And corrections or additions to my postings are welcome. All suggestions are responded to within 48 hours unless I am out of town. If you supply me with additional information, I will always research and double check it before posting it to a memorial. There is simply too much inaccurate information out there.

I have completed projects on all cemeteries in Hawley, Buckland, Colrain, and Charlemont, Massachusetts. And another in Sears Cemetery in Barnstable County. Current projects include the Jenks Family in Rhode Island, the Groton Avery Family, and Shelburne, Franklin Co, Mass cemeteries. If any of my entries connects to your ancestors, let me know.

Memorials I have added in the last 7 days.
Memorials I have added in the last 30 days.
If I have not added any memorials in the last 30 days, I am very likely dead... contact Find A Grave.

Please use the EDIT button on the memorial to initiate correspondence and recommend updates. I am no longer able to respond to emails that do not provide quick and easy access to the memorial in question. Also, if your e-mail is not provided on your profile page, I won't be able to respond to you if a response is needed. The public messages are not appropriate for back and forth discussion. And, if you have no email, I will not process edits until you provide source data.

There are so many "orphan" memorials here on Find-A-Grave, many of which have been posted en masse and then forgotten. So many need identification and linking so we know who they were! After posting a memorial, please take the time to research, identify, and link the memorial properly..... it will go along way toward further establishing the credibility of this site.

Regarding transfers outside guidelines..... I will consider transfer to those who have a proven track record of collaboration on FindAGrave.

RE: Gershom Bulkley
Actually, I am going to transfer the Gershom Bulkeley duplicate back to Marie and ask her to delete it, which will cure the Hannah (Raymond) Avery link problem. I hate merging, which leaves a remaining double (merged) link for the same person. Not a very clean way of doing business.

Hannah (Raymond) Avery etal
Thanks for the quick action on my auto corrections. Yes, the purpose is to get the 2007 memorial I maintain (created by Marie) for Rev. Gershom Bulkeley deleted in favor of the one erected in 2011 by Steve Goodrich, who is much closer in relation to the interrelated Bulkley-Goodrich-Treat families than me.

RE: Groton Averys

I just noticed that you posted a flower for a Mattoon Nims memorial in Deerfield, Massachusetts. I also go back to the Mattoon's of Deerfield, Massachusetts. My grandmother's parents were Elsie Grace Mattoon and Fred Upson Allen. Elsie was born in Kansas, but her grandfather, Jonathan Meeker Mattoon was born in New York. Her great-grandfather, Gershom Mattoon was born in Wallingford, Connecticut. Fred Upson Allen was born in Wallingford, Connecticut, September 11, 1888. I have looked at city directories, and there were no Mattoon's in Wallingford in the late 1800's. It seems it was just a fluke that Elsie and Fred met and married in Denver, Colorado in 1910. But, the Mattoon's and Allen's both go back to Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York in the 1600 and 1700's.

In a week, I will be in Connecticut and Massachusetts on a genealogy trip to visit the cemeteries and places of significance of my ancestors. I am so excited!

Earl Henry Bresette
Hi, I have attached a copy of Earl Henry Brisette death certificate to his findagrave memorial page. I noticed that the name of the cemetery was not that of West Colrain Cemetery. I only found two cemeteries listed in Colrain. Is the cemetery listed on the death certificate a lot in the West Colrain Cemetery? Possibly for infants or toddlers? I dont know to much about this cemetery.

Also it may be better if you changed his name to Brisette since this is what is on his birth and death certificates. His parents stones also have the surname spelling Brisette.

Let me know about the cemetery. I really can not make out the name but it does not to appear to be West Colrain.

Your feedback is appreciated.

RE: Barnard Photos in Shelburne
Sorry the picture quality isn't that great. Just couldn't get rid of the glare.

Avery's of Groton, Connecticut

Are you descended from the Avery's of Groton, Connecticut? I am, by way of marriages to the Allyn's/Allen's.

My grandmother was Lois Emma Allen, her father, Fred Allen, was born in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1888. His father or grandfather must have moved from Ledyard, New London County to Wallingford, New Haven County at some point in the 1700's or early 1800's.

I am making a genealogy trip to Connecticut and Massachusetts in October and hope to visit Wallingford, Groton and Stonington. I will visit the Allyn-Satterlee graveyard. I sent a letter requesting a visit to Allyn's Point Cemetery within Dow Chemical. That was a week ago and I haven't received a response yet.

I will post and share any Allyn and Avery gravestones I am able to visit (if images aren't already posted).

169435955 Amelia Weld Tallant Jencks
New discovery by Ken and some helpers. Amelia was not in the RIHCC database but they found her stone pieces today and put them back together. Sent you the links through the children.

These guys are out there volunteer laboring on Labor Day! Hope yours was a good one as well.

RE: William Sprague's wives
Oh good! Ken and Jo-Ann worked on this yesterday after the Discovery of Polly Joslin's crumbled stone, and I am just updating the parental links today.

Jo-Ann already sent the corrective information on Mary Ann (Read) Sprague, William's second wife to Thomas, the memorial manager. Just waiting for him to update to reflect her proper name and birth date, etc. It will be much more clear once that is completed.

The children should all be linked to the new memorial for Polly (Joslin)Sprague that Jo-Ann added yesterday with the photo of the stone Ken reassembled. All you can read on it is "Polly" "W" for William , the end of the name Sprague, and that she was 37 when she passed away.
